Obituary of Theta Alexander

Laverne (Vaughn) Alexander passed on to meet her Heavenly Father, at the age of 93 years on December 14, 2003, at the Carewest Sarcee. She was predeceased by her husband John Robert (Bob) Alexander in 1969 and her brother Theron Vaughn in 2002 in Lethbridge, AB. She is survived by her five children, Keith (Vanessa) Alexander, Hazel (Brent) Macnab, Donna (Earl) Engel, Lance Alexander, and Jack (Phyllis) Alexander; as well as fourteen grandchildren, twenty-five great grandchildren, and two great, great grandchildren. Born in Chattanooga, Oklahoma on August 7, 1910, Laverne came to the Vulcan area with her family in 1912. She married in 1928 Bob Alexander who had also come to the Vulcan area from North Dakota with his family. They had five children in seven years in the middle of the Great Depression of the 1930’s. Laverne was largely responsible for raising her family in the Christian faith, loading her young children onto the old Calgary streetcars to take them to Sunday school and church clear across the city. She gave us all a good start in life and to her dying days never stopped wanting to tell everyone about the gospel of Jesus Christ, which she did with gusto to anyone who would listen. In 1961 at the age of 51 years, she returned to education, earning a teaching certificate from the University of Calgary, after which she taught school in Calgary and Vulcan. She was a life-long student of the Bible and related literature, teaching Bible classes for many years to groups of like-minded people of all ages. She made sure all her grandchildren knew the gospel too. They remember Grandma for her urging of them to attend church and live on the straight path. She spent many of her later years writing Bible-based studies, which she did in long hand and which her daughter then typed for her. Unfortunately, no publisher could be found to see things her way, and the work remains as it began. But she was a soldier of the cross to the end. The family expresses its appreciation to the staff at Carewest Sarcee for the many years of tender loving care and the somewhat hazardous service at times since Mom could be rather feisty.
