Obituary of May Cates
Mary McNicol (Caldwell) Cates was born May 1, 1904, in Carnoch Scotland, and passed away on Saturday, December 6, 2003, in Calgary in her 100th year.
The family arrived in Canada in 1907 and moved to a homestead north of Excel in 1911. May married Howard Cates of Oyen in 1928. They lived in many towns in Alberta while raising a family of two sons and three daughters. They moved to Calgary in 1952 and lived in the Hillhurst Community for many years. They were members of the Hillhurst United Church and volunteered with Meals on Wheels for fifteen years. May worked in Sally Shops downtown for a few years and also owned and operated the general store and post office in Shepard. May and Howard moved to the Valleyview Lodge in 1986, and May continued to reside there after Howard died in 1988. The past two years she has lived in the Bow Crest Care Centre. May is survived by sons Gerald (Millie) and Art (Darla) of Claresholm; two daughters Lila Todd and Phyllis (Martin) Bellmont; son-in-law Paul Reinholdt of Summerland, B.C.; seventeen grandchildren, twenty-nine great-grandchildren, sister-in-law Mabel Whitney; cousins Archie (Doris) Caldwell and Margaret Prosser of Vernon, B.C.; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Howard, daughter Margaret Reinholdt, great-grandson Graham Bellmont, and son-in-law Delbert Todd.
Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W.), on Saturday, December 13, 2003 at 2:30 P.M. with the Rev. Robert Smith officiating.
