Obituary of David Valstar

He who dwells in the shelter of the most high will rest in the shadow of the Almighty, Psalm 91:1 Surrounded by his loving family, David went to be with his Lord and Saviour after a courageous battle with cancer, on Tuesday, December 2, 2003. David and his wife Nelly immigrated from Rotterdam, Holland in 1953 and made their home in Red Deer, AB. David worked as a psychiatric nurse at the Red Deer Michener Centre for twelve years and later became employed with Alberta Social Services and Community Health as a social worker. In 1970 David was transferred to Calgary and became Supervisor of Child Protection Services and later of J.D.A. and Children’s Handicapped Services. He retired in 1986. During the war he served in the Dutch Resistance as a journalist for the underground newspaper and, after the war, as a journalist for a Rotterdam newspaper until coming to Canada. David is survived by his loving wife Nelly, who was his devoted friend and companion for fifty-two years. He is also survived by daughters, MaryAnne (James) and Anita (Don); and one son Earl (Teresa); five grandchildren, Carrie (Steve), Mark (Amber), Erin, Ryan and Kristen; two sisters and one brother residing in Holland, as well as numerous nieces and nephews both in Canada and Holland. David was predeceased by his parents, four brothers, one sister and son-in-law Nick Oostlander. Funeral Services will be held at Grace Presbyterian Church (1009 – 15th Avenue S.W.) on Tuesday, December 9, 2003 at 11:00 A.M. with the Rev. Victor Kim officiating.
