Obituary of John Arthur Sykes
John Sykes of Calgary passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 27, 2003 at the age of 83 years.
He was born in Winnipeg, MB on August 19, 1920. He married Mary Lawrence in 1945, and spent his working career in the building supplies business in western Canada and retired in Calgary. John was quite active in the United Church, most notably at Southminster in Lethbridge and Southwood in Calgary. He loved people and took great joy in entertaining all with his quick wit, bad puns, humorous stories, hearty singing, and toe-tappin’ harmonica playing. Whatever his efforts, he worked for a smile.
John is survived by his children, Judy of Calgary, Bill and Ellen of Millet and Ed and Karen of Calgary; along with his grandchildren, Jenn, Tiffany and Ashton. He took great pride in their accomplishments. He is also survived by his two brothers, Clint (Bernice) of Sarnia, ON and Doug (Pat) of Calgary, and numerous nephews and families. John was predeceased by his beloved wife Mary, his parents Marian and Arthur and his brother Robert (Bob).
