Karen, I pray that the Lord’s peace will surround you and the family in your grieving.

Years ago, when I was Jim’s articling student, I was struck by Jim’s organization skill, and sense of priority. I recall he was starting what would be many months’ work on a significant file. He explained that first, he had discussed it with you given the impact it would have on the family, and second that he had acquired several work suits and white shirts, all the same, and this would be his ‘uniform’ in the weeks and months ahead as he devoted himself to the task at hand. Jim’s example was a strong, God-honoring one.

Jim made no secret back in those days, that he preferred politics to business. As Dick Haskayne noted at the memorial service, he was a valued Canadian, having had experience in both business and political sectors. I found myself drawn into political campaigns during my articling year, and have volunteered in them since. Jim’s enthusiasm was infectious.

Jim managed my articling year with deft political skill, determining early on, what types of work I needed, and for whom I needed to do work. He gave a lovely address for my admission to the Bar, and I was delighted that Justice Mason, allowed my father, a justice e from Northern Ontario, to sit with him on the bench. Somewhere, I have a lovely photo with Jim, as we stand, with a Mountie I think, in front of the brass doors of the old Calgary courthouse.

Karen, I give thanks for the years you and Jim had together. May you sense the Lord’s presence with you, comforting you, in this great loss.

My sincerest condolences to you all. Jim was so good to me and supportive of my role as Executive Director at the Calgary Police Foundation. Many have stated in the media that among his many wonderful traits was that he was a man of his word. That was certainly my experience working with him. The Foundation owes much of its initial success to Jim. The country, the province, Calgary and all who knew him have lost a great man.

Jim and I grew up in Schumacher where we went to school, played hockey together and became best friends. We lost touch for many years after he and his family moved to Grande Cache in our High School year. For many years our family watched with great pride of knowing Jim and all his successful accomplishments in such a short life. He affected so many people in this country in a positive light.

Jim and I finally connected again this past year and were just in the process of of finding the time to get together.

He will be greatly missed by family, so many friends and a country. It was a privilege to know Jim and be a friend.

I knew Jim through his time at CIBC. I want to express my deepest sympathies for your loss. He was a great person who I had the deepest respect for. I come from a small town in Ontario, where the best complement was to say a person was “good people”. Jim was definitely “good people”. President Obama was in Canada recently and in his speech said the world needed more Canada. Well, I believe Canada needs more Jim Prentice.

I watched the memorial today and Cassia, your tribute to you father was phenomenal!

Sorry for your loss, we met Jim many years ago when he coached our son John in hockey. We have met some times at different times in the past years. He was always very friendly, polite and we thought a lot of him. He will be greatly missed. RIP Jim.

Karen, I was very saddened when I heard the news about Jim. I had the opportunity to work with him when he was a Minister and I was with Bruce Power. I met Jim in 1986 when he was seeking the PC Provincial nomination in Calgary Centre. He was so sincere and his intelligence, loyalty and work ethic were always evident. I was on his team from that first meeting. He only lost that Provincial election by just over 300 votes . I moved back to Toronto in early 1987 but was always very interested in watching him move on to have a stellar career in service to Canada and Alberta. I had the honor and privilege of teaching Jim in grade seven and eight at Schumacher Public School.Even at that young age he exhibited the qualities that shaped his adult being. He was a quiet, effective thinker who showed an interest and concern for others. His personality was such that he effectively influenced others by this presence. We were close to his family having visited them in Grande Cache and hosting their family at a reunion at our cottage on Kenogamissi Lake. I am so very sorry for your loss. We are feeling it all across the country, I’m sure, but especially here in Alberta. Thank you for sharing Jim with the rest of us, for all the years when he contributed so much to Alberta. Gone much too soon, but his legacy is strong.

Jim was a wonderful colleague for five years at CIBC. His leadership on issues was unequalled. In particular his ability to mesh the requirements of the public sector with the private sector allowed him to craft solutions that we could only dream of. Beyond all of those very positive attributes and skills that are well known to all, Jim was a real human being. On meeting my son, once in Halifax at an event where he was speaking, he always would include a ‘how is he doing’ into our conversations. Finishing the day with a beer in a local bar with us demonstrated that despite the heights that he had flown to, he was down on earth with all of us. And his spirit shall remain so. To Karen and his family, my deepest condolences. But I will celebrate his life.
