Obituary of Ronald Victor NICKERSON

December 10, 1927 – Montreal, Quebec July 19, 2016 – Calgary, Alberta Ronald Nickerson beloved husband of Marjorie Nickerson of Calgary, Alberta, passed away on July 19, 2016 at the age of 88 years. Ron was born in Montreal, Quebec to Mabel Letitia Nickerson (Robertson) and Ronald Victor Nickerson. Growing up, Ron was a natural athlete and loved basketball. His claim to fame was when he had the opportunity to play against the Harlem Globetrotters. Ron attended Acadia University in Nova Scotia and graduated with a degree in Geology. It was there that he met the love of his life Marjorie (Boutilier), whom he married on December 26, 1953. Ron moved out west in the summer of 1954 as he began work with an Alberta oil exploration company. Ron and Marjorie also known as “Boots” started a family and lived in Innisfail, Cochrane, Edmonton and Magrath. He was a proud Albertan who contributed to Alberta’s oil exploration success throughout his career. His career as a Geologist provided Ron and his family opportunities to live overseas, including Singapore and Australia in the 1960’s. A pioneer in his field, Ron was part of a team that discovered the first commercial oilfield in Australia. When he moved back to Canada he was based in Calgary only. Ron will be lovingly remembered as a hardworking family man. He had an infectious laugh and loved talking about facts and trivia, as well as his passion for genealogy. Ron is survived by his wife of 62 years, Marjorie; two sons, Steve (Joanne) and Doug (Candy); four grandchildren, Angela (Jeff), Melissa (Josh), Christopher, Leighton (Emily); two great-grandchildren, Sophia, Olivia. Ron was predeceased by his daughter Deborah Lynn and his sister Joyce. A private family gathering will take place at a later date. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
