Obituary of Susan Lynn WONNACOTT
WONNACOTT, Susan Lynn (nee Uchtmann)
June 8, 1951 – Jackfish Lake, MB
May 23, 2016 – Calgary, AB
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Susan “Sue” Wonnacott, beloved wife of Wayne Wonnacott of Calgary, AB on May 23, 2016 after a brief illness.
Sue was born in the family log home in Jackfish Lake, MB, and grew up near Grand Beach. She attended the Misericordia General Hospital School of Nursing in Winnipeg, graduating in 1971 as a Registered Nurse.
After marrying her high school sweetheart Wayne in 1972, they moved to Victoria to start their life together. Following their move to Calgary in 1974, their sons Ryan and Craig were born in 1978 and 1981.
Sue devoted many of her years as an RN to pediatric oncology at the Alberta Children’s Hospital, a place which brought her great joy, until her retirement in 2012.
Throughout her adult life, she carried a strong and abiding belief in God and loved her church, its vision and its goals – and when feeling stressed, depressed, conflicted or sad – she felt most at peace there – a place where she developed so many fine and enduring friendships.
Sue enjoyed quilting and gardening, leaving lasting impressions across Western Canada. She was very active as an African violet society grower and judge for 15 years, and later as a member of the Peace by Piece Quilters Guild.
In later years, Sue and Wayne enjoyed spending time at their cabin on the Moyie River located in the B.C. Kootenays, shared with their friends of over 40 years Pat and Phil Morris of Calgary.
Sue was a kind, caring, gentle soul who wore her heart on her sleeve but was always a ROCK for her family and friends as whenever someone needed an understanding ear, a shoulder to cry on or some sound advice, she was there. She was a loyal, trustworthy friend who spread her love to anyone who would receive it, yet always had more to give. Sue was extremely proud of her boys and their many accomplishments; thrilled with her title of ‘Gram’ to her cherished grandkids – an endless source of so much happiness and fond memories – and was never happier than when in the presence of family and dear friends.
Sue will be desperately missed and mourned by those who loved her most and lovingly remembered by her large and diverse network of friends and neighbors. All will miss her beautiful smile, her infectious laughter, her kindness of spirit and even her stubbornness.
Sue is survived by her husband Wayne; her children Ryan (Joni) and Craig (Devynne); grandchildren Geordi, Nolan and Victoria; siblings Jean (Dave), Robert, and Gervin (Marian), sister-in-law Angela (Dennis), many extended family members as well as her ever-present four-legged calico buddy, Maggie.
She was predeceased by her parents Wilhelm and Marjorie Uchtmann, and sisters-in-law Jennifer and Illa.
Funeral Services will be held at Robert McClure United Church (5510 – 26th Avenue N.E.) on Monday, May 30, 2016 at 1:30 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through .
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Kids Cancer Care Foundation of Alberta, or the Agape Hospice of Calgary.
In living memory of Sue Wonnacott, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Eastside, 5388 MEMORIAL DRIVE N.E., Calgary, AB Telephone: 403-248-8585.
