Obituary of Leona Bernice HENKE

January 7, 1934 – Beiseker, AB January 1, 2016 – Calgary, AB Leona Henke, beloved wife of Emmett Henke of Calgary, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 1, 2016, six days before her 82nd birthday. Leona was born in her grandparent’s home on their farm near Beiseker, the second daughter to Peter and Magdalena Hagel. She married Emmett on November 3, 1954 where they lived most of their lives in their Calgary home. Leona enjoyed many aspects of her life but her first passion was being a wife, mother and homemaker. Leona will be remembered as a wonderful cook who loved to bake, spoiling her family and friends with her abundant treats. No one ever left hungry. In Leona’s later life, she was nicknamed “Smiley”, a name she earned as she always had an infectious smile regardless of her many health issues. She truly was an inspiration to her family. Leona is survived by Emmett, her loving husband of 62 years, her daughter and son-in-law Marlene and Jean-Claude Labillois; her son and daughter-in-law Ken and Susan Henke, four grandchildren; Garrett, Melissa (Nairn) Rodger, Ryan and Shane (Anu) Henke, one great granddaughter Everley Rodger, two sisters, Shirley (Mike) Bachmier and Joan Christensen, brother-in-law Joe Bachmier, as well as several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by parents Peter and Magdalena Hagel and her sister Lorraine Bachmier. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church (321 – 90th Avenue SE) on Thursday, January 7, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. The family would like to thank Age Care Beverley Center Lake Midnapore, Chaparral Unit for the excellent care and love shown by all of their staff.
