Obituary of Robert Carl SCHAMUHN
SCHAMUHN, Robert (Bob) Carl
July 5, 1927 – November 17, 2015
It is my honour to write my grandfather’s obituary. The loss of Bob Schamuhn, our Grandpa, has left me in despair, not wishing to imagine a world that does not include him in it, but now having no choice in the matter. Our family has always scattered and pulled apart as we moved towards our own separate horizons, and Grandpa was a source of stability and security, a fixed point by which we could take our bearings. Whenever I move, whenever I travel, whenever I work, I cast my life in comparison with his. By any definition Grandpa was a successful man, and that was important to him. But he taught me that what mattered was success won through respect, dignity, and kindness, through relentless hard work, and through the surpassing of expectations. The success that matters is that which leaves behind it a trail of lifelong friends and unending welcomes on the journey towards its own horizon. This was the nature of my grandfather’s success in life. He was 88, and his trail through life was long and rich. –R.E.
Bob passed away in the evening at Foothills Hospital, watching his beloved Flames win one last game.
He was predeceased by his wife of six decades, Pat, who passed in 2010. He is survived by his two daughters, Vicki Engen and Sheila (Tom) Montzka; His four grandchildren and their spouses, who all became his grandchildren too, will miss him terribly: Robert (Claire) Engen, Jeni Montzka, Kristy (Logan) Nicholby, and Kelsey (Micha) Montzka-Boettinger.
The entire family would like to extend our profound thanks to everyone on Unit 81 at the FMC for their heartbreakingly devoted care for Bob during his final five weeks.
