Obituary of Dorothy PARKINSON
April 4, 1918 – Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan
September 5, 2015 – Calgary, Alberta
It is with profound sadness that we announce the death of Dorothy A. McCully Parkinson on Saturday, September 5, 2015 in Calgary, AB
Dorothy was born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, on April 4, 1918, the youngest daughter of Frank Lynn and Bertha May McCully ( McNutt ).
Dorothy left Moose Jaw to attend U.B.C. where she met Parky while they were both students. Dorothy was a proud member of the Alpha Gamma Delta sorority. Upon graduation with a Bachelor of Arts, Dorothy went on to attend Provincial Normal School in Vancouver.
Parky and Dorothy were married on December 23, 1942 in Moose Jaw while Parky was on leave from the Canadian Army. Their son Robert McCully ( Macc) Parkinson was born on November 8, 1943. While Parky was overseas, Dorothy and Macc lived in New Westminster as Dorothy obtained a teaching position in Millardville , B.C. Upon Parky’s discharge from the army at the conclusion of WWII, the family settled in Regina, SK where their daughter C. Suzanne Parkinson was born. While living in Saskatchewan, Dorothy became a supporter of Tommy Douglas and the provincial CCF Party.
Dorothy and Parky moved to Ottawa in 1952 where they raised their family, made lifelong friends and enjoyed summers up The Gatineau.
While in Ottawa, Dorothy resumed her teaching career, first in the public system, then for thirteen years at the Hillel Academy. Dorothy was active in the Manor Park Community Association, U.C.W. at McKay United Church, Canadian Federation of University Women, Head Start and International House.
Upon retirement, Dorothy and Parky settled in Victoria, BC in 1972. Again, Dorothy became as active member of her community, including Western Community Baptist Church, Rotary Arms, CFUW, Probus and the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada.
After Parky’s death in 1991, Dorothy remained involved and active. She travelled extensively and in 2004 she married Bill and spent 7 years happily living between Victoria and Vancouver until Bill’s death in 2011.
Dorothy is survived by her son Robert ( Macc) Parkinson of Victoria; her daughter C. Suzanne Parkinson of Calgary; her grandchildren Kristen Parkinson ( Ont.), Scott Parkinson (Ont.)Kim Blackwell ( Jason Craig ) of Toronto and Kathleen (Katie) Morgan ( Sean ) of Calgary, as well as her three great-grandchildren; Maude Rose Craig, Joshua and Emma Morgan, in whom she took great delight. She is also survived by her nieces Kelly Marshall, Barbara Hill, Beverly Donnelly and nephew John Dede and their families.
Dorothy was predeceased by her parents; Frank Lynn and Bertha May McCully (McNutt); her beloved husband of 46 years, Robert ( Parky) Parkinson; her second husband William (Bill) McIntyre; her sisters Lillian Brook and Winnifred McCully; infant brother John McCully and her niece Nonie Dede.
Dorothy’s ashes will join Parky’s in the Pacific Ocean, where he spent many, many hour’s salmon fishing.
A Celebration of Dorothy’s Life will be held at Parkdale United Church (2919 – 8th Avenue N.W.) Calgary, AB on Sunday, September 20, 2015 at 1:30 pm with a reception to follow in the church auditorium. Forward condolences through .
