Condolences
If love could have saved you, you would have lived forever! Miss you JC!
I realize this is quite late, I have been out of touch with Calgary for a couple of years. JC, was very important in my business life, and I considered him a friend, as much as can be given 40 years age difference, and having a business social context. I have so many stories, and fond memories of JC in business, playing golf, or poker. And of course, finding ways to have a few drinks, fun, and try as hard as possible, to almost get in trouble.
JC was one of the sharpest minds in the oil patch over his career, with the rare quality, of betting big, on what he knew. And, he could entertain, which is pretty rare in business, and kept people interested, even when things weren’t going his way.
I won JC’s “Legends of the Oilpatch” medal from him, many years ago, probably 12 plus, I knew then, it was something I would treasure, because he was a treasure, and I’ll always feel real emotion, admiration, and fondness, when ever I pull that medal out, or think of him.
I feel lucky, to have shared the part of his life, that I did, and am proud, that I am pretty sure, he felt the same way.
J.C. I Love you!! There are no words a daughter could say for the experiences you so gracefully helped me through. You taught me how to respect, enjoy, and accept all around me, even if I did not agree at times. You built a great business, and taught me how to do the same. Although I do not have Children I have our family, and many friends, which you also taught me the importance of. I will cherish the wonderful times you and I shared. Nothing can replace that!!! I LOVE YOU JC
I spent the last week thinking about so many good and interesting times I had with JC in Calgary, across Canada, the US, the UK and Europe. He was larger than life and had a wonderful and most often very inciteful one liner for just about everything he was or was not asked to comment on!
I am currently in the UK and sadly unable to attend today’s service. An Era has just ended and I will be having a few toasts to JC’s memory tonight.
I have a wonderful letter of recommendation he wrote to the Alberta Securities Commission when I was becoming a Director of my old firm Deacon, Hodgson. It was hilarious, derogatory and not what he actually forwarded to the ASC. I never saw what he sent but I know they would not have approved me if it had been that letter!
So many great memories of different and often unusual times together. I am a lucky man to have known JC Anderson – he was truly a special!
It is with a heavy heart that I learned about the passing of an extraordinary gentleman and philanthropist, J.C. Anderson, whose generosity touched so many including many Easter Seals Camp Horizon campers. J.C. had such a big heart and I was so happy to see him at the Easter Seals Camp Horizon 50th Anniversary this past summer. He will be missed, but his legacy will live on.
Sincere condolences to his family and friends,
Stephanie Rosch, Easter Seals Alberta
My thoughts and prayers are with you Susan, John, Sandra and Karen. JC was an incredible supporter of the community and his investment in Easter Seals Camp Horizon made a truly remarkable difference for kids with disabilities and the staff they rely on. I’ve heard one of our campers say he couldn’t believe anyone would make a place like the new dorm for people like him. For anyone who knew JC, its no surprise that JC made that dorm possible and he did it for the hundreds of people with disabiliities to have a summer camp for many more years. Larger than life is a good description of JC and there is no doubt he used his life to improve the lives of many around him. Thank you JC – you’ll always have a place of remembrance at our campfires.
I got to know JC over the past 7 or 8 years that I have been coming to The Anderson Ranch to officiate at the FEI International Show Jumping Competitions held there throughout the summer and more recently at the Royal West Horse Show at the Agrium Arena on the grounds of one of JC’s favorite places the Calgary Stampede. I was provided a vehicle and would usually use one of his during the events. I would jokingly ask to use his Bentley and he would not comply and laugh, but this spring when I arrived he thought it would be good to put some miles on the Bentley which had be sitting in the garage all winter and to my surprise he gave me the keys. After a few days of driving around with it, I told him it could become habit forming and he laughed. Whenever I had free time I would go up to the house and spend time with him. He had an incredible memory about his interests and enjoyed educating me about how the Petroleum business was conducted. JC loved his family and would really enjoy it when I did some cooking and gathered the whole family around his dining room table for a sit down dinner. I got to watch Golf, Horse Racing and more recently political debates with him. I will miss you old friend, Rest in Peace.
Karen, John, Sandra and Susan:
So sorry for your loss. I truly thought J. C. would go on forever! I worked for him for 10 years and learned so much. I don’t live in Calgary anymore so will be unable to attend his service.
Sincere condolences,
Bob Sumner
My condolences to JC’s fiancee, Karen and his children John, Susan, and Sandra. I had the great pleasure of sharing many conversations with Karen and JC at birthdays, Christmas dinner, golf club lunches and attending church. JC was such a bright man and a real leader who helped to make Calgary what it is today.
He will be missed by many! With deepest sympathy, thoughts and prayers, Leann
To the loving family of JC Anderson my condolences go out to you .
he was a visionary and a hard worker, obviously loved and will be missed by all.
May he rest in peace
I had the pleasure of working with J.C. the first few years he delved into the cattle business. He had the heart of a true rancher and was bound and determined to make Anderson Ranch one of the premier outfits in the area. Well done sir!!
Our thoughts and prayers to the family.
Alan Alger and family.
To Sandra, Austin and Eric,
While I only met JC once, William had the pleasure more often. The words in his obituary ring true to me. I sensed his larger than life presence. I know you will miss him and we are thinking of you in this difficult time.
With love,
Donna, Ben and William Tilden
John, Sandra and Susan, I regret that I wasn’t able to see your Dad more in recent years. But I have such great memories of knowing him during the glory days of the “A Team” and my frequent visits to Calgary from the ‘80s through the early 2000s. I remember well sitting at the dinner table at your house in 1988, when we were preparing to go to Seoul, and he was planning to take Anderson Exploration public. I was much younger then and rather dumb about business, but he had such a down-to-earth way of explaining his passion. I had no idea I was witnessing oil patch history. In many subsequent conversations, over the years, I learned so much from him about business and the oil patch. His success truly never changed him. But, while much is said about his business success, and I value being a witness to that, he had a greater passion, and that was you three and Bryan. He was so proud of all of you and had a special grin on his face every time one of your names came up. My greatest memory of him will be he hospitality he always showed at your home and how he made me laugh every single time I saw him.
I first met JC in the early 70’s when he was building a new home. I met him again a couple years later at an evening event at the CPC. I happened to sit beside him and we had chatted. I told him I was going into business on my own and explained what I was planning. As we chatted he gave me some very simple advice that I followed as best I could, through out my business career. That advice really helped me create whatever success I had; I never forgot the advice; nor who gave it to me. I’m very sad for his families’ loss; but they can take some solace from the fact that he was larger than life to many; while they had him up close and personal throughout their lives.
Although I haven’t seen JC for some time, always enjoyed talking with him at the SOFA reunions (former employees of Stanolind Oil/Amoco). My deepest sympathy, thoughts and prayers are with his family at this time.
JC’s passing has left a tremendous hole in our hearts at Hull Services and we wanted to pass on our thoughts, prayers and condolences to all his family at this difficult time. JC’s support of the kids at Hull over the years has been significant. Today thousands of Hull’s children are leading better lives because of JC’s generosity and thoughtfulness. His legacy is quite remarkable throughout Calgary, while here at Hull, we will be ever grateful for JC’s commitment and big heart.
Thank you JC, from all the kids
Dearest JC,
I have 21 years of fond memories my most favorite being the day we were engaged. I love and miss you so much! xo Karen
Our family has benefitted greatly from the legacy of JC Anderson and his gift to the community in the Rocky Mountain Show Jumping Venue. I’ve had the immense pleasure of working for RMSJ since 2010 and I got my fill of JC’s humour! He was very deliberate with his intent but always had a joke in the mix (whether it was my big girlish pens he couldn’t handle or to rant about the City creeping on down the road) he ended every meeting with a laugh. JC has a great legacy in the MD of Foothills in particular, over 3000 acres on top of RMSJ, we as a community really don’t understand that a lot of those cherished open spaces and foothills vistas were his and he was an amazing steward of this land! We pass our sincere condolences along to our friends and family at RMSJ and to John, Susan and Sandra, may peace be with you at this time.
I will always cherish my many moments I was lucky to spend with JC talking about Art, the army, horses and his incredible life.. It is a privilege to say I know the Anderson Family well and my heartfelt condolences go out to them….Love Bobbie
Although we only knew JC the last few years of his life, we found him to be an extremely passionate man and a good time to have a drink with. One of our fondest memories is the cattle drive we participated in driving a couple hundred cows and bulls from one of his pastures to another and the big BBQ afterward. That was a fun day. Thanks again JC
Mike and Sue
My condolences to Karen, John, Susan, and Sandra. As you know I worked with JC for 10 years, and those 10 years were the most challenging and enjoyable times in my career. We worked hard and played hard. JC was a friend and mentor. He was honest, caring, and generous. He will be missed but the stories will live on!
