Obituary of Terrence MCPHEE
December 7, 1932 – Glace Bay, Nova Scotia
March 25, 2015 – Calgary, Alberta
It is with great sadness that the McPhee Family announces the passing of Terry McPhee, at the age 82, at the Rockyview Hospital in Calgary, Alberta.
He is survived by his wife Fran Conn McPhee and the children of their deceased mother, Sue Neufeld; Bev (Keith), Cathie (David) Maureen (Wendell); grandson Caton; granddaughters, Sue, Jillian, Kesa and McKenzie; sisters, Irene, Eunice (Henry), Zita and Mildred (Lorne); and his many nieces and nephews of whom he proudly spoke and loved. He is also survived by step-children Michelle (Ken), Geoff (Jacquie), Maureen (Sandeep); grandchildren Joel, Anthony, Kaleb, Danielle, Halley, Rohan, and Marek. Terry was preceded in death by father Donald John MacPhee and mother Mary Catherine MacPhee (Walsh); brothers, Urban & Blair; brother-in-laws, Roddie MacNeil, Tom Goldie and John Regier; sister-in-laws, Catherine MacPhee and Liz Neufeld; niece Paula MacPhee Thiessen; and nephews Peter Goldie and Clinton Wiens.
Growing up in Cape Breton, Terry worked in the family coal mine located on their land. He also worked at the steel plant in Sydney, NS and Maritime T&T to earn money for his geological education at St Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. After graduating, his love for adventure moved him west in 1957 to Swift Current, SK to work as a geologist for Mobil Oil. It was here that he met his first wife Sue Neufeld (1936-1987). Terry married into a large Mennonite family and loved his brother-in-laws with whom he always had lots of fun…too much fun sometimes! In 1992, Terry married Fran Conn and continued to enjoy life with his new extended family. Fran and Terry enjoyed cruising and traveling, spending winters in Mesa and Mexico, and watching their grandchildren’s activities. Sports were a passion of Terry’s, playing hockey as a young man and continuing on to play with the Lumsden Old timers, as well as coaching young men in Lumsden. He was an avid Saskatchewan Roughrider fan from his first days in the province. Terry was a well-learned man and appreciated the intellectual mind. Nature was embraced as he watched and fed birds, owned horses, many cats and dogs, raised chickens (even chicks in the house) and ducks. Art played an important part in his life including writing, painting, drawing and story telling. The McPhee Family genealogy was being documented by Terry as he loved and embraced his heritage, complete with stories and anecdotes of his family. Terry was an inspiration to many people and his philosophy in life was to be good to our neighbors, strive for success and keep hope alive. He will be remembered as a generous man in many facets of life.
