Obituary of Apolonia Pauline KOVACIK

KOVACIK, Apolonia August 18, 1920 – Kvacany, Slovakia January 5, 2015 – Calgary, Alberta Pauline beloved wife of August Kovacik of Calgary, passed away on Monday, January 5 2015 at the age of 94 years. Pauline was born in August of 1920. In 1938, when she was only eighteen years old, she left to make a new life in Canada. With one little wicker suitcase of items from the old country she landed on the east coast and travelled across the country by train to join her sister Annie in Alberta. Within a year of arriving she met and married August in Calgary. Her family enjoyed her baking and looked forward to her traditional crescent cookies and kolachi rolls. She did very intricate and beautiful needle work such as cross stitching and crocheting. Another hobby that she enjoyed was paper tole work. Each of her grandchildren have cherished examples of this work that they proudly display. She was also an avid gardener and filled her fridge and freezer with produce to be enjoyed throughout the year. Pauline is survived by her son Ron Kovacik; grandchildren Tanya Kovacik and Fiona Kovacik; great-grandchildren Lauren Kovacik, Ian Dunkley, Sam Tardif, Flynn Tardif; nephew Paul Duros; niece Jenny Cools (nee Kovacik) and friends Tilley, Corey, Welma and Yogi. Pauline was predeceased by her loving husband August Kovacik (August 1904 – October 1998); siblings Anna Duros, Jan Zigraj, Alzbeta Feckova, Stephan Zigraj. The Family wanted to say a special thanks to her niece and nephew Paul and Jenny. They have been indispensable over the years in helping take care of Pauline. Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive S.W. Calgary, AB) on Monday, 2015 from 9:00 to 12:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. James’ Catholic Church (5504 – 20th Street S.W.) on Monday, January 12, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. Burial to take place at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
