Condolences
I was deeply saddened to learn recently that Clarence ("Mr. Nickel") had passed last August. I grew up two houses away from Clarence, Kathy, Wendy and Corrine, and no one could have had better neighbours than we did. Their lawns and gardens were the envy of the neighbourhood and spurred everyone else to do better, putting considerable pressure on me and by brother, Chris, to do the best lawn work possible. "Mr. Nickel" was a wonderful example of a devoted family man, community member, and consummate professional, in a very dangerous profession. We admired him tremendously, and despite our frequent adolescent stupidity, he always treated us with kindness and respect. I will always be grateful that Clarence, Kathy, Wendy and Corrine were such a large part of my young life. (Ian Clarke)
We were very saddened by the news of Clarence's passing. Working with Clarence at Fire Headquarters was an extreme pleasure as he was always willing to provide whatever assistance he could. I always enjoyed working with him due to his positive outlook. Rest in peace Clarence. Our sincere condolences to Kathleen and family.

Dear Kathaleen and Family
We are so sorry for your loss. Clarence was a wonderful man and the best neighbour anyone could ever hope for. He was such a kind and helpful person and his warm and witty sense of humour would always brighten up the day. By example, he taught us so much about what it meant to be Canadian. We were privileged to be his neighbours.
With love and best wishes
Amanda and Graham
Dear Kathaleen, and Family.
We have fond memories of Clarence sneaking treats through the fence to our kids, while we looked the other way. . Together you both taught us how to be great neighbours. We knew how strong your family is tied together buy how often Wendy and Corinne would come for visits, and then when the grand children could drive they came too of their own volition. Clarence radiated with a bold laughter, and we could always see the twinkle in Kathaleen's eye when he teased her.
We were the benefactor of so many great giving moments over the years, over the fence, and straight in to our hearts.
Clarence, you are fondly remembered and deeply missed. We will always remember how well you treated others, how giving you were to our kids, never missing a holiday or birthday. We admired your meticulous nature in your yard, and try though Art might, he could never beat you out to the sidewalk in the morning when it snowed.
Sincerely, Art, Trina, and Hanny(Davin)
Dear Kathaleen and Family,
I was saddened to read of Clarence's passing. He was such a passionate and willing volunteer with the Stamped Band Committee when we first met, a true example of volunteerism. Every time I plant a begonia, I think of Clarence in his wonderful garden and how proud he was to share his expertise. I hope your sadness will be tempered with your positive memories of this very special man.
Sincerely,
Carol Fowler

We cannot give enough credit to Clarence what a great husband, father, grandparent, great grandparent, uncle and a truly wonderful friend. When he was deputy fire chief of Calgary he looked amazing in his uniform and always acted with the greatest respect. He loved that job he always said it wasn't a job to him he enjoyed it so much.Clarence would shovel snow for numerous neighbours in his street he was so careing. Whenever we moved house which was often! he was always there to lend a hand .He loved to have a drink with people and go for a Chinese or whatever you fancied on the day.Such a wonderful person there will never be another like him.He will be sadly missed by everyone who knew him.Rest in peace Clarence we all love you and miss you.He will never be forgotten.
I am the youngest daughter of Brenda and Norman Lawrence.
Mom and Dad always spoke fondly of both Clarence and Kathaleen. They were always willing to lend a hand if needed. Growing up on 18th Street NW I too have fond memories of the neighbours we had there. We kids thought it really special to have a fireman on the street! We also had a motorcycle policeman across the street too! I think the adults had a great time too! I know that besides myself Mom and Dad would want to express their sincere condolences to Kathaleen and Family. Thinking of you all during this most difficult time.
Sincerely Lynne Lawrence Crowder
We are so sorry to hear of Clarence's passing. He was one of the best fire captains I ever worked with as well as being a great person to socialize with around the firehall kitchen table. He was always willing to share his knowledge and loved to listen to others. Our sincere condolences to the family at this most difficult time.
Sincerely, Ted & Lily Heynen
