Condolences
I just found out about Rod's passing. My condolences to his family. He and his parents were close friends of my grandparents and my dad in Winnipeg ( Doug and Mac Findlay) and spent time with them along with some of his teammates at our family cottage. My dad lost touch with him. But I ran into him on a flight out of Winnipeg when I was a teen back in the 80s and we had a great time as he caught up on my family.
My cousin Rod, my sister Elaine and I were the three grandchildren of Horatio (Harry) and Margaret (nee Campbell) Bower. Harry and Margaret had eight children: Rod’s father, Frank, was the second of four boys; our dad, Harold, was third. Rod, Elaine and I grew up in Winnipeg, went to college in Winnipeg and on graduation from college moved out of Winnipeg
Rod was six years my senior and eight years older than Elaine. We got together with Rod mostly at Christmas celebrations. Christmas dinner at our dad’s parents was a tradition. All the kids and grandkids got together. Grandma cooked the turkey, trimmings and apple pies in her spacious “country style kitchen: at 187 Maryland. Competitive cribbage, canasta and other card games were played in the parlors. We all caught up on what we all were doing. Football was big in Winnipeg and Rod was a star player. We all followed Rod’s career and looked forward to hearing about Rod’s exploits in the Junior League and with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Rod’s father Frank was an avid supporter and we sometimes joined him and dad to watch Rod play.
After leaving Winnipeg our pathways diverged – but we always followed with interest what Rod was up to. Of late, Rod’s passion for ancestry has added to our collective understanding of our roots. We will miss him and the conversations we can never have.

Rod lived large! Going back almost 70 years I can relate that he has was an all star football player in
High school and playing basketball and on swim team and curling teams he also was involved in student
Government and sang in the choir. During his excelling time at university he played football on two
Canadian championship teams and was installed in the Manitoba Football hall of Fame. Over the past
30 years he organized reunions every 5 years will fallow members of the Clear Lake Club. The "Best" best
Man a person could have!
He will be missed.

Our deepest condolences on your dad's death. We met both Rod and Penny many years ago through my sister and brother-in-law Marg and Dave Chalcroft and had the pleasure of cruising with them in the Caribbean. They were both wonderful people to be around and to have known for so many years. During this difficult time lean on each other and your friends for support. RIP Rod.
