Condolences
My sincere condolences to John’s family. I first knew John at Shell and later through mutual friends. Loved his humour and loved his wisdom. He will be greatly missed by family and friends.
Laura,
my sincerest condolences on the loss of your dad. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

To Kathy and the entire family,
We extend our deepest sympathies to you and your family. We are deeply saddened by the news. It has been a privilege for me to work with John in our years passed in Calgary. I will always remember him for his kindness, exactness and as a great mentor. May he rest in peace.
To Kathy and the entire family:
My sincerest condolences and sympathy for your loss. I first met John as a result of the 1984 Shell move to Calgary, with many interactions during both our careers and in the years after retirement. The neatest coincidence was that Brenda and I purchased (in 1984) the former Servais ‘homestead’ in Willow Park – and several years ago, John stopped by with grandchildren so that he could ‘show them where their mother once lived’. His intellect and humanity will be missed.
We are so very sorry for your loss. Such a good man and father. Our thoughts and prayers are with your family and may God Bless.
John was someone that I admired as a man of integrity who always tried to do the right thing rather than what might be politically expedient. A good man! I count myself lucky to have known him.
John was the senior member of seven Toronto cousins who were the children of two sisters,Camilla and Madeleine. He was the cool older cousin who would arrive every Christmas afternoon with a warm smile, friendly greeting and genuine interest in each of us younger ones. Usually there was a new LP on the stereo … maybe Bob Newhart… and we would listen and laugh but mostly enjoy the loud guffaws from John and our brother Dave.
John’s move to Calgary meant we had only brief interactions either in Toronto, later by email and once on the ski hills at Sunshine with his buddies. And, of course, in true John fashion, he quietly arrived in Toronto for the funeral of his good friend and cousin David. He was such a thoughtful and kind gentleman!
From Toronto we send our sympathy and prayers to Kathryn and Anne and the Servais children and grandchildren.

Kathy, my sincere condolences for your loss. John and I worked together for many years. He was a great mentor and good friend to me. He was larger than life and more energy than almost anyone I knew. I have just received the sad news, Rosina and I are out of town so will be unable to attend todays service. Our thoughts are with you.

I was surprised and saddened to learn of John’s recent passing. As a former Shell colleague, I always appreciated John’s authenticity, his honest and forthright communication as well as his terrific sense of humour.
When I think of “Smilin’ John” … I also think of his dear friends and colleagues, Wayne Stewart, Murray Rose and Fred Prior. Where there was 1 … there was usually 3 others not far behind … chuckling, laughing and teasing one another. What a terrific foursome of friends they were – very inspiring, sometimes challenging, always willing to volunteer and lend their support (including financial) to various not-for-profit organizations, definitely memorable … and always great fun to be with!
John, we will miss you … Our night sky is a little brighter these days with your “shining star” well-positioned in this great universe. It was an honour to work with you all those many years. I offer my sincere condolences to your family, friends and loved ones.

I always admired John. For his determination to ‘walk the talk’. Actually he never talked about his walks; but he certainly walked – Chairman of the Hospital Board, broking his leg campaigning for a charity are two of the things I know that he did and admire him for. We need more ‘walkers’ like him and we are all poorer for his passing. I know you will miss him, as we all will, but you should be proud of him. May we all imitate his example.
