Bill, Daphne and family,
Cathy and I want to express our sympathies and understanding regarding Ralph’s passing. No matter how well a life is lived, the ending is always sad, and he will be missed by many more people than you know. How wonderful though, that there is such a large family to both fill in memories of happy times and for support now.
I knew Ralph from working with him in roles where we were not generally in the same city, but what always stood out for me was that he was a real “gentleman” in the best sense of the word, and contributed much to the company’s culture and the development of its people. His modesty is captured perfectly by the expression “A little luck can take a guy a long way.”
Our sincere condolences to you all.

We were very sorry to hear that Ralph passed away. Ralph worked with my father-in-law Alex Skene at Imperial Oil for many years. Ralph and Jeanne attended our wedding in the Niagara Region of Ontario 30 years ago. A couple of years ago I spoke to Pat trying to locate Ralph for Alex. He did get to visit him at the Colonel Belcher. There are many fond memories in the Skene Family of the Routledges. We send our sincere sympathy.
Stephanie and George Skene
You don’t know me but I will always remember Ralph for his warmth and friendliness at Imperial Oil. A fine gentleman.

Dear Bill,Daphne, Stephen and Katie;
It is with sadness that my good wife Christine and I learned about Ralph’s passing. We still have fond memories of the last time we saw him over Thanksgiving dinner we had the pleasure to share with him and all of you in Edmonton. He and I had the opportunity to reminisce about my days in Sarnia as a cocky co-op engineering student holding his ground over where his next work-term assignment would be. Always a wise owl, Ralph found a win-win. I ended up in my preferred location but reporting through his organization, just like he wanted in the first place. What’s even more impressive is that his bow-tie never moved nor did he ever bat an eye while I made my plea. Leaving his big-cheese office I was convinced that my employment prospect with IOL were history but intuition and wisdom prevailed and he allowed me to move on and enjoy a great career at Imperial where I had the privilege to work closely with his son Bill.
At 94, many probably say that he had a great life. That ”little luck” carried him into a long retirement enjoying Florida with his partners and all. That said, it is always too early to lose a father or a grand-father and for that reason we would like to offer you and all your extended family our deepest and sincerest condolences.

Our friendship with the Routledges goes back to our time in Sarnia with Imperial Oil. We have many fond memories of our times together. We offer our deep condolences to the family at this sad time.
Ralph was the reason we moved our family to Calgary in January 1979 from Churchill Falls Labrador. Imperial Oil offered me a position as a Project Manager on the original Cold Lake Project as a result of Ralph’s recommendation. He was a remarkable gentleman and very supportive executive to we younger engineers in Imperial Oil. I will always remember his help in our transition. As he said, moving to Calgary was the best thing to do! God Bless, Ralph
