To the Hughes family,
Very nice service.
I didn't know her well but I have fond memories of Betty, having met her several times at Falcon Lake. She was always so sweet and kind to me.
My deepest condolences to the family.
Grant
We were so sorry to hear of Betty's passing. We knew her for many years at the Confederation Park Seniors Choir where she had been a member long before us. Conversations with her were always very interesting and we know she enjoyed being part of our singing group. After she moved into the Arbour Lake resident, we visited her several times. For a while she remained a part of our Choir and Brian used to pick her up and drive her to practices and our sing outs. Unfortunately we had not seen her in recent times mainly because of the visiting restrictions during COVID.

It's hard to know where to begin with Betty. Over my 21 plus years at West Hawk Lake, Betty, Pearce and "the family" were for many of us keenly awaited family. "The lake" and the West Hawk United Church did not feel complete without them. Pearce had this calm intense presence and Betty brought the music. The cottage was their "home" in so many ways. Here they gathered as family and with friends, laughing, sharing, always an open door from two people with open hearts.
I will never forget the Sunday that betty stopped in the middle of a hymn and said to the gathered folk, "All right people you are making a mess of this. We can do it. Now let's start all together again. This time we will get it right!" Both Pearce and Betty would beam (almost glowing) when David would arrive and consent to sing a solo.
Betty asked deep questions, raised difficult concerns. Every summer she would search her soul with courage and endless curiousity. As time passed I personally admired her in so many ways. Mostly because as the years she became more and more her "own" person. Often question were about life after death. "What does eternal really mean? Will we know we are dead when we die?" Little things like that!
Her greatest pride, joy concern and focus was always her children, their children and family. I will be with you all in spirit tomorrow as you let go of her body, and hold onto her essence of being. Women of her generation were truly pioneers of self-reflection and self-expression. Betty and Pearce hand over the light of their souls to the next generation and the next and the next and so it goes...love is eternal. Blessings and gratitude always, Karen Toole
Thank you for posting the obituary in the Montreal Gazette. I had heard by the Leeds Ave grape vine that Betty had died.
We lived next door to you on Leeds Ave. and Tom babysat for our girls on many occasions. Susan was an au pair for Joan and Garry at the arrival of their third son. Susan still has the cowbell she received as a memory of the summer spent in Lausanne. We were very lucky to have your family next door as neighbours and were sorry when you moved away in 1990.
Betty was a stalwart at the United Church and Pierce was always a source of knowledge on home or gardening work.
So very saddened to hear of Betty’s passing! She was one amazing lady, filled with a passion for living and loving everyone she met! My husband and grandsons used to deliver the paper to Betty on their bicycles. She quite often had butter tarts waiting for my husband John, who passed away 4 1/2 years ago! Her zest for life and all it had to offer made everyone smile! She played the organ during the summer months at West Hawk Lake. It was such a JOY to see her up at the front! Her energy for all life had to offer was such a gift, I personally will miss her and her ability to light up a room!
Sincerely, with love, and sympathy Bonnie Scott
Dear Hughes family
I am one of Jeanne and Jack Randle's daughters. So sorry to hear of Betty's death. I know that Mum enjoyed their friendship so much. Very best to all of you.

Dear Hughes family, we bought your Leeds Avenue home from Pearse and Betty thirty years ago. We knew them from Beaconsfield United Church and respected them greatly. We have loved this home as you must have and always felt the love from your family here as we raised our own three girls and now enjoy it with our grandchildren. We were so sorry to hear of your mother’s passing as we had heard she had recently celebrated her birthday. She was a truly lovely person, as was your father. We often mention them and were saying only a few days ago to Michael Larkin ( now our neighbour at 188), that our family is now one of the longest residents on Leeds, We still call many of the homes by the names of their former owners…I’m sure you have many memories. That being said we send our good wishes to you all at this sad time, but may it be a comfort to know that Betty will always be mentioned fondly here.
Best wishes Daveen & Peter Garland
