Obituary of Shih-Chen (Susan) Hu

Shih-Chen “Susan” Hu of Calgary, AB, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 17, 2021, at the age of 92 years.
Susan was born in Kiangyin, Kiangsu, China, on August 19, 1929. An exceptional and gifted student, she received a scholarship by The University of Toronto, department of Food Chemistry. After her studies in Taiwan in 1957, Susan continued her education in Toronto and graduated from The University of Toronto with a Master’s in food chemistry in 1960. She married Shih-Sheng Hu in Kingston, ON in a civil ceremony on May 12, 1960. When Evan was born in 1961 followed by William in 1964, she left her full employment in the food inspection to focus on her children. She continued to work part-time in her field as the family moved from Kingston to Saskatoon in 1964, Winnipeg in 1968, Toronto in 1978, Edmonton in 1980 and finally to Calgary in 2000 after her and Shih-Sheng both fully retired from their professional careers.
She was a wonder in the kitchen and embraced all that Canada had to offer. She inquisitively mastered the art of cooking roasts, pizza and many other dishes as well as baking cakes and pies all while sharing her Chinese dishes with friends and family. Their many friends, and their sons, Evan and William’s friends could be found sharing traditional Chinese dishes on weekends that she and Shih-sheng prepared. She had a passion for new cuisines which she shared with her grandchildren on her weekly visits, exploring new restaurants and visit old favourites.
Susan is survived by her sons, Evan (Jane) Hu and William (Vanessa) Hu; and her cherished grandchildren, Ashley Hu, Emma Hu, Katie Hu, Stewart Graham-Hu, James Graham-Hu, Robert Graham-Hu and Matthew Hu. Susan was predeceased by her husband Shih-Sheng and her brother Wu Shih-Ang.
