Obituary of Italo Mario Morello

Italo Morello, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather passed away on Saturday, November 20, 2021 at the age of 84 years.

Italo was the third of seven children born to Casimiro Morello and Regina (nee Coletti), in the small town of Santa Cristina of Quinto, Treviso, Italy on December 30, 1936. 

Italo apprenticed at a young age as a cabinet maker, working during the day and studying drafting and developing technical skills in the evening. In early adulthood he decided to work abroad in Australia with his brother, Romolo, before returning to Italy. He took great pride in woodworking, creating exquisite custom pieces. 

In 1969, he met the love of his life, Liliana (nee Volpato), whom he married in 1970. Together, they lived fifty-one years in marriage. In 1976, he was hired to work at Scandinavian Wood Industries Ltd. in Calgary, Alberta. At that point, Italo emigrated from Italy to Calgary, Alberta with his young family. He later went on to work at SMED International Inc. until his retirement. 

He was an active member of the Italian parish, placing God at the center of his life, followed by his family whom he was particularly proud of, especially his children’s and granddaughter’s achievements.

Italo loved spending time with his family and friends, enjoying the outdoors, tending to his garden, hiking in the mountains, going for long walks, playing cards and creating artisanal furniture. 

He will be most remembered for being a man of great faith, courage, tenacity, integrity, an avid reader and a contemplative man with a witty sense of humour.

Besides his loving wife, Liliana, Italo is survived by his two daughters, Luana and Lara; a granddaughter; and a great-grandson. 

Italo is also survived by four siblings in Italy: Clara, Rinaldo, Claudio and Claudia; as well as nieces and nephews.

Italo was predeceased by his parents, Casimiro and Regina, as well as two brothers, Dante and Romolo.

Gratitude is expressed to the staff at the South Health Campus who cared for Italo Morello in his final weeks. Special thanks go out to the care teams in the RAU and Unit 66, including the dedicated nurses, healthcare aides, and doctors, notably, Dr. Fell, Dr. Leah and Dr. Lo.
