Obituary of Yeh-Ping Sunny Sun

October 14, 1948 – Beijing, China

January 17, 2022 - Calgary, Alberta

Yeh-Ping ‘Sunny’ Sun beloved husband of Hsiao-Yen Kelley Sun (nee Chen) of Calgary, AB, passed away on Monday, January 17, 2022, at the age of 73.

Yeh-Ping was born in Beijing, China on October 14, 1948. He emigrated from China to Taiwan when he was an infant. He and his family immigrated to Canada in 1995, and resided in Lethbridge, AB, for five years. In 2001, he and his family moved to Calgary after his daughters graduated from the University of Lethbridge. Yeh-Ping graduated from the Chinese Airforce Academy with a degree in Engineering. He joined the Armed forces and was stationed in Taichung, Taiwan. Yeh-Ping married Kelley in 1975. Yeh-Ping accomplished much throughout his life and was particularly proud of his golfing skills. He made a lot of friends on the golf courses. Many people wanted to team up with him, as they knew he would help them win. Even though he did not speak English very well, his ability to play golf well earned him lots of friendships. Yeh-Ping enjoyed playing golf, tennis, and bridge, reading martial arts novels, watching movies, and building small tools. Yeh-Ping’s most memorable vacation was when he was working and stationed in Heidelberg, Germany. He and his co-worker once went to the same restaurant every day for a month. He and his co-worker could not speak German, nor could the restaurant owner speak English. They each ordered a dish following the numeric order every day until they exhausted the entire menu. He learned what each dish’s name meant, and his favorite was schnitzel. Yeh-Ping enjoyed watching movies by himself. He finally started watching movies with his wife after he retired. Kelley introduced him to one of her favorite movies “An Affair to Remember”. It became his favorite chick flick. He will be most remembered for his quick wit and dry sense of humor. He often pulled out a joke when people were least expecting it. Once he and his family were visiting his mom in Taichung, the weather was super cold, and everyone complained about how cold they were in the house. His mom said “The blankets on your beds were at least 10 kgs in weight. How could you be cold?” He replied drily “Would you be warm if someone were to lay a concrete wall on you?” Everyone laughed, but his mother was not amused.

Besides his loving wife, Yeh-Ping is survived by his two daughters and two sons-in-law. Alexandra and Lawrence Fisher, and Kimberly and Todd Powell; his three grandsons, Patrick Fisher, Ethan Powell, and Aaron Powell, all of Calgary, AB.

Yeh-Ping is also survived by his one brother and one sister of Houston, TX, USA; one sister of Los Angeles, CA, USA; and one brother of Taichung, Taiwan. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Yeh-Ping was predeceased by his parents.
