Melvin Heinzlmeir

Obituary of Melvin Anthony Heinzlmeir

 March 18,1930 - Rockyford, Alberta

April 13, 2022 – Calgary, Alberta

Melvin Heinzlmeir, beloved husband of Elsie Heinzlmeir (nee Mayer) of Calgary, AB, and much-loved father, passed away on Wednesday, April 13, 2022, at the age of 92.

Dad was born on March 18, 1930 in Rockyford, Alberta, attending school in Baintree and then Rockyford High School. At the age of 18, he moved to Calgary to attend business college where he took bookkeeping, and then worked as a bookkeeper at Westin Bakery. In 1950, Dad met his future wife Elsie on a bus traveling from Calgary to Beiseker to attend a wedding.

Dad and Mom were married on February 6, 1952 and went on to raise four children. They farmed in the Rockyford and later Beiseker area till 1992 when he and mom retired and moved to Calgary.

He always strived to achieve the best and in 1996 won third place in the world’s wheat competition.  Dad was extremely interested in the early history of the prairies and loved looking for arrowheads and hammer head stones and accumulated an amazing collection.

One of Dad’s favourite activities was flying, earning his private pilot license at the age of 62. He also enjoyed the creativity of wood working and welding.

Dad and Mom also loved to travel, visiting Australia, Fiji, New Zealand, Spain, Portugal, Scotland, Morocco, Japan and Hawaii (especially The Big Island as he particularly loved the volcano!)

Dad often said that he found hard work enjoyable, and always told us “Work hard, work smart, be self-sufficient and spend only what you have earned”.

This year Dad and Mom celebrated their 70th Wedding Anniversary, with their children at their side.

Melvin is survived by his wife Elsie and their children, daughter Linda (Bob) and their children Craig (Kathleen) and Marina; son Larry (Verna) and their daughters Sherisse and Amber (Chris); son Dennis (Kelly) and their children Kaitlin (Ryan) with Calvin and David; Taylor (Lindsey) with Andi and Felix; Jenna-Rae (Brady) with Paige and Levi; Lewis (Chelsey) with Kollyns; Austin, Brittany, Brianna, James, Reggie and Dane and daughter Diane (Paul) and their children Colin (Liz), Brandon (Kristina), and Kelsey (Ryan).
