Condolences
I was deeply saddened to learn of Derek’s passing. Although we have been out of touch since high-school days, I highly valued his friendship as a classmate and academic competitor, as a team-mate in basketball, and as a co-member of the math club. He excelled at everything, displaying a quiet self-assurance and engaging personality that belied his years. I am so glad that he led such a full and fulfilling life. My condolences to his family. As a fellow angler, I can only hope that, when I pass on, I run into him again, chasing silver fish in a silver stream.
Dear Pat,
We are so sorry to hear about Derek's passing. You and Derek were one of our favorite couples to play bridge with - we'll miss him. We hope you'll still have dinner and play bridge with us and the group.
Our deepest sympathy,
Claudette & Bob Field
Dear Pat and family:
We are so sorry to hear of Derek’s passing. We knew Derek from participating in a great travel group that explored eastern and southern Europe by our own small bus tours and the Baltic sea countries by a Viking cruise ship. The recent Baltic cruise trip was particularly enjoyable as the travel group numbered 14 and we were able to secure our own large table in a separate room for all the evening meals.
Derek was always so knowledgeable about the new travel areas that were being explored. He shared and explained country maps with many of the travelers and even introduced many of us to geocaching where travel treasures deposited by other travelers were found and Derek left new mementoes for future travelers.
Derek and Pat added so much to the travel group itineraries and we marveled at Derek’s energy levels while combating his medical condition over the years.
Sincerely,
Hank and Joan
I will never forget:
- family time at Lake Invermere
- fun times at the Crow Awards
- playing bridge
- gin rummy
- fishing at Pearson Lake
- I miss and shall never forget my special friend Derek!

We knew Derek in law school and will remember him always. His passing is a loss to all who were in his year. Our condolences to Derek’s family.
My deepest sympathy to Derek’s family.
I met Derek as a member of the Ranchmen’s Club. I got to know him while golfing with him at a tournament at Pinebrook Golf Course. We hit it off right away and became friends. I always enjoyed seeing him as he was upbeat and fun. I didn’t see him much in the last few years, but I can honestly say that he was one of the finest men that I ever met.
God Bless the Martin family at this time.
Rest In Peace Derek
Your friend Brian Jones
Our deepest sympathies Pat and family for your loss. Derek’s kindness to his extended family, my parents Allen and Yvonne, was appreciated more than words could express. He fought a difficult battle in recent years. We will remember him.
My deepest condolences. I have many fond memories of Derek when I was growing up as a kid a few houses down from his family and kids. He was so generous and hospitable. And I will always remember a weekend at the Windermere cabin when I was a teenager. Derek must’ve spent countless hours driving us kids around on the boat that weekend but with a smile on his face the entire time. He is deeply missed.
Our hearts go out to Pat and the kids for their loss of Derek.
Derek was very determined not to let Parkinson's slow him down and we all admired his strength. Everywhere he went and everything he did was with a smile on his face. With deepest sympathy, the Fleming family
Our family has watched Derek’s perseverance and tenaciousness in dealing with Parkinson’s, and how he worked to continue to do the things he enjoyed including fishing, golf and travel. We are saddened to hear of his passing, and we send our deepest condolences to Pat and the family. You are in our thoughts and prayers.
So sad to hear the news. Many great memories of my Uncle Derek: from his recent visit to our home with Aunt Pat, to family gatherings over the years, and even way back to the many Gill family gatherings at the Marina Hotel. Our deepest condolences to Aunt Pat and family from Airdire.
To Pat and Family, our deepest sympathy!
Wishing you all peace to bring comfort, courage to face the days ahead and loving memories to forever hold in your hearts.

My Uncle Derek was a very special uncle who despite living across the country from us, was very supportive and involved in our lives. I was very blessed to see him several times in the last few years and have special memories with him. I love his kids – my cousins, and my Aunt Pat, very much, and hope they know I will be there for them in the future, and we will all tell our favourite Uncle D stories because there are lots! Hugs
We are so saddened to hear of the passing of Derek. Our deepest condolences to Pat and the family. He will be so missed at Larch Point.
I've known Derek and family basically since birth. He called me Blue Eyes every single time I saw him. I remember his gentle nature, sparkling eyes and warm smile. He will be missed greatly. Jennifer Osmond
Pat and Family...my thoughts are with you all....Derek was a truly great fellow who never let his condition slow him down. I saw his determination shine on one of our Cuban fishing adventures while he repeatedly cast to a school of spooky Tarpon. With the wi d in his face, he laid out 20 or 30 casts at the target....laughing and smiling the whole time....never giving up....his enthusiasm was infectious. That has inspired me and that is how I will remember him....my friend Derek.
