Obituary of Jean Burton

March 26, 1929 – Gravelbourg, Saskatchewan

June 7, 2022– Calgary, Alberta

It is with great sadness that the family of Jean Isobel Burton announces her passing on June 7, 2022.

Jean was predeceased by her beloved husband Ken. They were truly devoted to one another throughout their life and enjoyed a sixty-five-year marriage, filled with love and laughter. She also leaves behind her children, Kathryn, Sandra (Tim), and Neil (Vania); and grandchildren, Sean, Connor, Kearan, Scott, and Sarah, whom she adored and who will miss her dearly.

Jean was born and raised on the family farm near Bateman, Saskatchewan. Growing up with four brothers and many farm chores, she developed a strong work ethic and independent nature.  From a very young age, Jean knew her calling in life was nursing. She attended nursing school at the Moose Jaw General Hospital and received her Registered Nursing degree in 1950.

Jean later moved to Calgary and worked in the obstetrics and maternity wards at the former Holy Cross Hospital. Jean took an extended break from nursing to raise her children but would later return part time to the Foothills Hospital where she worked in the newborn and neo natal intensive care units until she retired.  Jean was truly passionate about nursing and her long career brought her great satisfaction.

Jean had a strong faith and was very active in the St. David’s Church & Friendship Club, and Grace Presbyterian Church. She loved to sing and was a member of the choir for many years.  Jean loved playing cards and played bridge for many years. She cherished her friendships and always looked forward to getting together with her family and friends.

Jean loved to cook and would prepare exceptional meals; her turkey dinners and homemade rolls and pies were a highlight for many.  Jean also loved to travel and over the years she and Ken enjoyed many vacations, especially winter getaways to Hawaii.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Grace Presbyterian Church (1009 – 15th Avenue SW, Calgary, AB) on June 13, 2022 at 10:30 a.m. Reception to follow at the Church Hall. Condolences, memories, and photos may be shared and viewed here.
