Victoria Hagel SCSL

Obituary of Victoria Mary Hagel SCSL

November 5, 1937 – Schuler, AB

June 12, 2022 – Calgary, Alberta

Sister Victoria (Vicki) Hagel, a Sister of Charity of St. Louis, passed away peacefully at Southwood Hospice, Calgary, on June 12, 2022, at the age of 84, 63 of those years in religious life.

Sister Vicki, seventh of twelve children, was born and grew up on a farm near Schuler, AB.  She joined the community in 1957 and made her first profession of vows in August 1959 in Medicine Hat, AB.   Her many years of service included teaching in Moose Jaw, Wilcox and Regina, SK, parish ministry in Medicine Hat and Calgary, AB, in Fort St. James, BC with the indigenous community. She served as a member of the SCSL Provincial Council and cared for our senior sisters at St. John’s Convent in Calgary where she also had the privilege of caring for Ginny, her ailing blood sister and community member.

Sister Vicki was a woman gifted with many talents; music and singing were her passion. With her unbounded energy, she directed choral groups with students in Wilcox and Regina and went on singing tours with them.  For every occasion, an invitation to a sing-along was the norm!  She was very involved in leading music ministry in the parishes she attended or where she ministered.

Vicki had a special devotion to Mary and the recitation of the rosary with community and friends was dear to her heart. She had the privilege of making a pilgrimage to Lourdes, France and Medjugorje, Bosnia-Herzegovina.

In her retirement years in Wilcox, SK and Medicine Hat, AB, Vicki continued to be involved in parish ministry, with the youth at Notre Dame College, bible study, prayer groups, music ministry and communion services in long-term care facilities.  She had a love of nature, enjoyed long walks, and devoted herself to gardening, the fruits of which she liberally shared with family, neighbours and the needy.

Sister Vicki will be lovingly remembered by her SCSL Sisters; brothers, Ben (Elaine) and Pat (Kim); sisters, Fran Chevrier and Marie Myerchin, sister-in-law Arlene (Clarence); and numerous nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and nephews, and many friends. She was predeceased by her parents, Victor and Lena; sisters, Milly Lynch and Ginny SCSL; brothers, Leo (Fr. Paul osb), Fr. Len, Clarence, Tony, and Frank.

Funeral Mass will be held at Canadian Martyrs Catholic Church (835 Northmount Dr. NW, Calgary, AB) on Saturday, June 18, 2022, at 10:30 am. Reception to follow at Canadian Martyrs Parish Hall.  Cremation and burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery will follow at a later date. Condolences, memories, and photos can also be shared and viewed here. If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made directly to Elizabeth House (c/o Catholic Pastoral Centre, 120-17 Ave SW, Calgary, AB T2S 2T2, Telephone: (403) 218-5500, www.elizabethhousecalgary.ca), a shared ministry of the Sisters of Charity of St. Louis and the Diocese of Calgary.
