Bernard Burnand

Obituary of Bernard Britton Burnand

December 19, 1925 – Calgary, Alberta

August 15, 2022 - Calgary, Alberta

It is with great love and sadness that we announce the passing of a beloved husband, brother, father, uncle, grandad and great-grandad, Bernard (Bernie) Burnand. He passed away peacefully on Monday, August 15, 2022, at the age of 96 years.

Dad’s strong faith in the Lord was displayed by becoming an Elder at Grace Presbyterian Church where he served for almost 40 years.  He spent many days in the kitchen as a member of The Knights of Grace preparing delicious food for the Mustard Seed and Inn from the Cold.

Bernie had a successful career as a businessman and owned Burnand Printing for over 50 years and CanWest Label for a decade. His love of the outdoors and his penchant for being a lifelong teacher began when he was a leader in Scouts Canada. Dad spent many summers with his wife Jean, his children, and grandchildren up at the A-frame at Sylvan Lake. His passion for hunting and fishing will live on through his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will be profoundly missed up at the cabin teaching his great-grandchildren how to fish, shoot or enjoy one of his wonderful stories and songs.

Dad travelled around the world including Africa, China, Israel, and the UK. He was also a keen badminton player at the Glencoe Club Calgary.

Dads’ passion was the love of his family.  There was a twinkle in his eye and a smile on his face whenever anyone came for a visit. He loved life, happy hours, and cooking for company. He cherished every opportunity to spend time with his family. He also holds a special place in his nieces’ and nephews’ hearts.

Left to cherish his memories are his children Peter Burnand (Dianne), Heather Walton (Steve) as well as his son-in-law Dr. Michael Richardson, and daughter-in-law Karen Burnand; his five grandchildren, Sean Burnand (Jennifer), Amy Vansickle (Paul), Kyle Steele (Nicole), Sarah Burnand and Rebecca Burnand; his eight great-grandchildren, Clayton, Carson, Addison, Spencer, Britton, Marcus, Emmett, and Isla will cherish the memories they had with “G.D”.

Bernie was predeceased by his wife Jean, brother Leonard, daughter Eloise (Lisa) Richardson and his son Reverend Andrew (Drew) Burnand. His unconditional love, kindness, knowledge, and generosity will be remembered by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Dad will be forever missed for the man he was and the dedication he showed his family. Our Dad was a warrior who fought the good fight until the end.

May his memory be a blessing.
