Obituary of Dorothy Janice Flitton

Dorothy Flitton of Calgary, AB, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 22, 2022, at the age of 91.

Dorothy was born in Stanstead, QC, on June 9, 1931. She graduated from the Montreal General Hospital School of Nursing and worked for the Victorian Order of Nurses. While raising her three children, she taught Sunday School, led babysitting courses with St. John’s Ambulance, and participated in many local activities and groups.

Dorothy’s life revolved around her love for Guildwood Community Presbyterian Church, in Scarborough, ON, where she taught Sunday school and participated in the choir. She always looked forward to helping at the annual church bazaar.

Dorothy loved cats and over the years her family had many, with most of them coming from farms in the Stanstead area. Her last cat Freddie was the one she spoke of most often.

She will be most remembered for her sense of humour, kindness and willingness to help. She made friends with everyone she met. She enjoyed meeting with the “Birthday Girls,” her dear circle of close friends whose company she enjoyed for many, many years. “The Birthday Girls" supported her through many of life’s challenges and successes.

In 2019, Dorothy left her friends behind and moved to Calgary to be closer to her son Ted. She made new friends at Carewest Sarcee, including the many staff members, who carefully and expertly shepherded her through the challenges brought on by Covid and her final illness. All the while, Dorothy made sure to keep the laughs coming when she could.

Although Dorothy spent her final years in Calgary, her heart remained in Stanstead, and particularly with her mother, Ruby Greer, of Stanstead and sister, Adele Snyder, of Kingston, ON, who she spoke with almost daily while they were still living. Dorothy is with them now, planning dinners, shopping trips, and drives to nearby Newport, Vermont and Lake Memphremagog, QC.

Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Corinne, of Toronto, ON, son Ted, daughter-in-law Cathy, grandchildren Zoe and Quade of Calgary, and son Bob and daughter-in-law, Gloria of Guelph, ON, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
