Charlotte Gaffney

Obituary of Charlotte Elizabeth Gaffney

March 18, 1928 – Bruno, Saskatchewan

January 16, 2023 – Calgary, Alberta

We wish to share that Charlotte Gaffney our beloved Mother, Aunt, Grandma and friend passed away this past Monday January 16, 2023 at the Father Lacombe Care Centre where she had the good fortune to live since July 2022. She was 94!

Charlotte was born in Bruno, Saskatchewan on March 18, 1928, to Alfred and Theresa Moll who had emigrated from Germany. She and her older sister Loretta took care of their mom and found a sweet, pink house for her before they each stepped into independent lives with their husbands and families.

Charlotte moved to Alberta and raised five children with her husband Myles Gaffney. Family life was very important to her, she loved taking care of us and taking care of her home.  She also found success and happiness in her work life beginning as a teacher in rural schools in Saskatchewan, a brief stint with Imperial Oil in Regina, ESL teaching in Lethbridge and Calgary and was the Coordinator of the Calgary Immigrant Resource Centre.

Friendships were central to Charlotte’s life from childhood right through to the staff and residents that she met at Father Lacombe in the last 6 months of her life. Telling a story from any point in her life it would always be about the friends made, neighbors that meant so much, families that inspired, colleagues she held close – especially the Resource Centre team, mentors, people she mentored, her dear scrabble club friends, the dogs – especially Piya, the cats – especially Missy.

Charlotte will be dearly missed by her children: Michelle (Cameron), Father Myles, and Maureen; and grandchildren: Joshua, Breanne and Eero. She also leaves behind a loving list of relations and friends. She was predeceased by her sons: Bernard and John and her beloved sister Loretta Schropp.

Michelle and her husband Cameron van der Linden and their children: Josh and Breanne gave unparalleled love and support to Charlotte over the years.

Our family is so grateful for the profound care she received from Dr. Angela MacArthur and the entire team at the Father Lacombe Care Centre – they saved her life.

Vigil prayers will be held at Canadian Martyrs Catholic Church (835 Northmount Dr. NW, Calgary) on Thursday, January 19, 2023, at 7:00 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, January 20, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. Reception to follow in the Brebeuf Room, followed by the Graveside Service at Queen's Park Cemetery. Condolences, memories, and photos can also be shared and viewed here.

In living memory of Charlotte Gaffney, a tree will be planted in the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area by McInnis & Holloway Funeral Homes, Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road SE, Calgary, Ab t2x 3j3, Telephone: 403-256-9575.
