Obituary of Murriel JOHANNSON

January 2, 1935 – Dawson Creek, British Columbia February 17, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta Murriel beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother, passed away on February 17, 2019 at the age of 84 years. Murriel was born in Dawson Creek, British Columbia, and was the oldest of four siblings, Marguerite, William (Bill) and Douglas (Doug). She spent her early years on the Benwyn Farm which her father Henry Bentley and wife Mabel homesteaded in the early 1930’s. Murriel graduated from South Peace High School in 1953 and started her working career in the office of the Fort St. John Lumber Co. She soon met John Johannson (Markerville, Alberta) at a local dance and the two were married in 1955. In 1957, John now working for Geophysical Services Incorporated (GSI) moved Murriel and new son Dennis to Calcutta, India, as their first overseas adventure. While in India, their second child Diane was born. Murriel and John’s growing family next moved to Libya where their third child Darrel was born. After a few more years living in England and Texas, the family returned to Canada permanently in 1967. Murriel went back to school soon thereafter to upgrade her secretarial skills and worked for a temp agency before accepting a permanent administrative assistant position in the Controller’s Department of Amoco Canada. She worked for Amoco for 18 years until her retirement in 1991. Murriel loved to travel in retirement spending many of her winters visiting children and friends living abroad, RVing through the western USA or flying to her timeshare in Mexico. Murriel was predeceased by her husband John (1986) and son Dennis (2007). She is survived by her children and their spouses, Diane (Michael), Darrel (Andrea); her grandchildren, Gillian (Nigel), Hayley (Thomas); great-grandchildren, Jones and Leon; special family member Mogens as well as by numerous other relatives and friends. A celebration of Murriel’s life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Park Memorial, , Calgary, AB) on Tuesday, June 4, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home.
