Obituary of Ismail Dawood
August 20, 1936 – Durban, South Africa
February 14, 2023 – Calgary, Alberta
Ismail Dawood, beloved husband of the late Maureen, of Calgary passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 14, 2023, at the age of 86 years. Ismail was born August 20, 1936, in Durban, South Africa. He immigrated to Calgary in early 1971, followed by his wife and five children.
Ismail was a devoted Catholic and a parishioner of St. Gerard’s Catholic Church. He was an avid gardener—a hobby he shared with his wife Maureen during their 56 years of marriage. He played top level soccer in South Africa and Canada until 1988. He loved classical music, reading and discussing politics.
Ismail’s academic achievements include Bachelor’s degrees in History, Psychology, Education and English. He earned Master’s in History (Social Studies), Science (Clinical Psychology) and Education (Curriculum and Instruction). He also has a diploma in Mathematics. Ismail’s passion for social studies led him to author the Alberta Jr. High textbooks, Brazil: Land of Contrasts and The History of Canada to the 20th Century.
His teaching experience spans 60 years in Africa and Alberta. Most of his years were spent as a teacher at St. Bonaventure School with the Calgary Catholic School District.
Ismail is survived by his and Maureen’s seven children and their spouses/partners, Jennifer and Trevor, Michael and Connie, Cheryl and Gerry, Neville, Allan and Iman, Mishelle and Rick, and Anthony, all of Alberta; fourteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his wife Maureen, parents Ruby and Moosa, and his son Christopher.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St Gerard's Catholic Church (8944 Elbow Dr SW, Calgary, AB) on Friday, February 24, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. Reception to follow in St Gerard's Catholic Church.
