Obituary of John Loewen

January 21, 1933 – Friedensfeld, Ukraine

March 1, 2023 – Calgary, Alberta

John Loewen of Calgary, AB passed away on Wednesday, March 1, 2023 at the age of 90 years.

John was born on January 21, 1933 in Friedensfeld, Ukraine (now Mirapol) to Nicholas and Anna Loewen.

He is lovingly remembered by his wife of 67 years, Elizabeth, daughter Pearl (Darren) and sister Helen. He was predeceased by his brother Harry and son Ken.

John encountered firsthand the Second World War and lived the experience of losing his father and fleeing across Europe into Canada at a young age. This experience shaped him profoundly.

He was a self-educated, and self-made man who achieved great success in his 30-year career at Sears Canada, and second career as a house contractor, furniture builder, home inspector, and wine maker. He was also the president of a large condominium strata in Kelowna, BC.

John was a voracious reader on anything related to science, philosophy, or history, as well as a news junky, especially politics. He loved imparting his knowledge to others. John also loved nature and was active until well into his 80’s. When he could no longer golf, he pursued biking and walking. The hills of Kelowna, then the wooded pathways of Griffith Woods in Calgary were explored daily. He was a decent photographer, horticulturist, and card player. He loved classical music and classic movies. He could fix almost anything, and in his later years he could break almost anything too.

John was a man with a keen intellect, strong opinions, and a love of dialogue and debate. His motto was, “If you agree on something, why talk about it?” Sadly, it was his intellect that declined in his later life (vascular dementia), leading to a series of losses, not always accepted graciously. It did, however, allow another side of him to emerge: affectionate, tender, and loving, even his playful side at times. We named this persona “Papa.” Papa moved into Millrise Seniors Village in his last year of his life and was well-loved and respected by staff and other residents alike. John’s family offers its sincere appreciation and gratitude to Dr. Cunningham and the amazing staff who so patiently cared for him even when it wasn’t easy.

“We love you, Papa.” (To which he would respond “I love you more.”)

In honour of John’s wishes, there will be no formal service at this time. A small family/friend gathering will be held in the spring. Condolences, memories, and photos can also be shared and viewed here.
