Ted Hensby

Obituary of Ted Hensby

September 18, 1940 – Timmins, Ontario

February 25, 2023 - Calgary, Alberta

Ted was born in Timmins, Ontario in 1940 to Donald and Marcelle Hensby. After 82 years of life, he passed peacefully - his wife by his side - in Calgary, Alberta.

He met the love of his life, Barb, in 1957 but, since Ted went away for school, they would not be reunited until 1963. And, in 1964, they married and remained so for 58 years! Ted and Barb eventually embraced Red Deer as their home - where they spent most of their early married life.

Always knowing he was University bound, Ted ended up at the University of Alberta where he earned two degrees: Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Education. He earned a reputation as the best Chemistry teacher at Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School where he spent the majority of his career. When they welcomed their boys, Barb named them Bradley and Michael and she still uses their birth names when addressing them. But to Ted, they would mostly be Brad and Mike. Of course, as both boys experienced - right to Ted’s last days in hospital - sometimes their names were lovingly shortened to “guy”. Just that one phrase of “Hi guy,” flowed heartfelt love for his sons. That “Hi guy” love would also greet his grandsons, Adam and Dillon, who would feel it embrace them.

Ted’s hobbies always kept him active. Whether hunting pheasant or playing golf, Ted was drawn to the outdoors and could always be found puttering outside - even when there was nothing left to do. His lawn was as pristine as his tomatoes and if he wasn’t being directly active himself, he was watching sports: Oilers, Roughriders, and the Toronto Blue Jays.

In later life, Ted and Barb moved to Outlook, SK where they fit into the small-town life perfectly and created strong bonds of friendships. They were dedicated members of the Outlook Alliance Church and active members of the community with Ted often doing his daily walk to the post office and then to the bakery.

In this last year, Ted and Barb moved to Calgary to be closer to family and, to no one’s surprise, they have been welcomed by their new community in their residence.

Besides his loving wife, Barb, Ted is survived by his two sons and their families: Brad, Jocelyn, and Dillon, and Michael, Karen, and Adam; his brother and his family: Doug, Jacqui, Eben, Aetan, and Kyle; his brothers-in-law Harold and David and their families, as well as his sister-in-law Laura and her family.

We all miss him greatly and will celebrate his life through our vivid memories and all the times he made us laugh.
