March 11, 2023 - Calgary, Alberta

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Joan Hanna, beloved wife of Grant Hanna for 40 years, on Saturday, March 11, 2023, at the age of 72 years. Besides her loving husband Grant Hanna, Joan is survived by her daughters, Elaine, and Carol; son Michael (Amy), and grandchildren, Mackenzie, and Eli. She is also survived by her sister Christine (Peter) Goodman. Joan was predeceased by her Father Jens Jensen, and Mother Amelia Jensen.

Joan was born in Calgary, AB, and grew up in Banff, AB. Joan graduated from Banff High School, then moved-on to get her degree in Nursing from St. Michael’s School in Lethbridge. She started her career at the University of Alberta Hospital and spent the majority of her career in the Emergency Room at the Children’s Hospital. Where she was an integral part of establishing what is now known as Healthlink – 811.

Joan and Grant met in June of 1981, at a Toastmasters event, they were married on February 12, 1983. Together they shared many wonderful memories and adventures. Joan had a servant’s heart and loved helping people. This was seen in the many organizations that she volunteered with. The ones that were closest to her heart included; Therapeutic riding both with Opening Gaits and Foothills Therapeutic riding: and Ronald McDonald House where she and her fellow ACW member of St. Peter’s Anglican Church founded what is known as the dinner program. This has now become a major volunteering opportunity in the community to provide a meal to families. Most recent one being Kitchen Theatre with the Calgary Stampede

A Celebration of Joan’s Life will be held at Anglican Parish of Christ Church (3602 – 8th Street S.W., Calgary, AB) on Saturday, March 18, 2023, at 1:00 p.m. Reception to follow in the Crump Room at the Church. The family invites those attending to dress in colour.
