Timothy John Ross (Tim) Godfrey, P. Eng.

Obituary of Timothy John Ross (Tim) Godfrey, P. Eng.

September 30, 1938 - April 27, 2023

We are heartbroken to announce that Tim passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 27, 2023, after a short illness, in Calgary, Alberta.

Left to mourn is his wife of 61 years, Elaine (nee Moloughney); their children, Maureen Barker (Brian), Bill (Bill Dunn), Michael, Carolyn (Tim Popein) and Lorraine (James Mattson); and grandchildren, Devon, Cameron, Jeremy and Brenden. He is also survived by his sister Patricia Monaghan and many nieces and nephews in Alberta, Ontario, New York and England. He was much loved and is fondly remembered by Elaine’s extended Moloughney family. Tim was predeceased by his brother Donald and sister Pamela Samuels.

Tim began his journey as the son of an apple farmer outside Simcoe, Ontario, where he ran amongst the apple blossoms and developed his lifelong love of the outdoors. Camping, canoeing, long drives in the country or simply working and whistling in the garden always made him happy.

He graduated from Queen’s University in 1960 and had a fulfilling career in the mining industry, as an engineer and geologist with Cominco, Amax, Meadowlark Farms, Union Oil, Precambrian Shield Resources and Transalta Utilities.  While doing field work in New Brunswick in 1960, he met a charming nurse in a Bathurst eatery and started a conversation that lasted almost 63 years. After their honeymoon they moved to Vancouver, where their children were born. Tim was transferred to Calgary in 1975, and it was there he finished his career with Transalta Utilities and enjoyed his retirement.

He was involved in numerous professional organizations, including APEGA and CIM, where he chaired multiple committees and advisory boards. He also volunteered across many areas, including Scouts Canada, the Calgary Police Service, doing taxes for retirees and the unhoused, or working tirelessly at various charities and fundraisers. He enjoyed singing with the TARA Glee Club, working the Transalta gardens, learning with the Collectors Club and regular reunions with his Nene scouting group. Tim was a passionate curler who always enjoyed the annual team weekend at Crimson Lake.

An appreciation for old things was a central passion, be it rocks, antiques, or treasures found in old mining ghost towns. Canadian art of any kind was something he truly cherished. Beauty was also found in theatre, musicals, museums, travel, and the simple joys of family.

He loved nature and he loved art. In lieu of flowers, please take a walk in nature, gaze upon something beautiful, remember Tim and whistle a happy tune.
