Obituary of Iain Roe

January 6, 1943 – Liverpool, England

May 3, 2023 - Calgary, Alberta

Iain Roe beloved husband of Patricia (nee Davies) of Calgary, AB, passed away on Wednesday, May 3, 2023, at the age of 80 years.

Iain was born in Liverpool, England to Elizabeth and George Roe on Jan. 6, 1943. He was close to his sisters Iris and Morag (Mo), and they had a happy childhood in Seaforth. Upon graduating from Waterloo Grammar School, Iain began his career in the construction trades.

He was a hard worker, but also took advantage of Liverpool’s vibrant social scene of the 1960s. As a young man, he watched The Beatles at The Cavern Club and was once at the same party as John Lennon, which is a story he could have milked way more than he did. In 1963, he met Patricia Davies, who would become his wife two years later. They welcomed their first son, Michael, in 1966, followed by Peter in 1971.

In 1976, Iain and Pat decided to emigrate to Canada, settling in southeast Calgary. Iain soon established himself as a dependable and highly skilled glazier. He worked on many notable downtown high rises and buildings such as the Petro-Canada Centre (now the Suncor Energy Centre) and TD Square (now The CORE Shopping Centre.)

He also spent several years with the Calgary Board of Education in the glazing department.

Iain was known for his cheeky sense of humour and sharp wit. He was friendly and open and was well-liked by his colleagues. He could get along with just about anyone – from bank tellers, Costco employees and car mechanics to his long-time family physician, Dr. Falodun.

In his later years, he enjoyed cheering on his beloved Liverpool FC, sharing his homemade wine, and doing his daily crosswords and Sudoku. He valued his time with his family and friends and especially loved hanging out with his grandson, Charlie.

Besides his loving wife of 57 years, Iain is survived by his two sons Michael and Peter, one grandson, Charlie; as well as niece Carrie and nephews; Ian, Mark, and Alan from United Kingdom.

Iain was predeceased by his parents George and Elizabeth and sisters Morag (Mo) and Iris.

A Celebration of Life will be organized at a later date.
