Gladys Connolly

Obituary of Gladys Isobel Connolly

June 19, 1939 – Brandon, Manitoba

May 3, 2023 - Calgary, Alberta

Gladys did many things in her life but what was important was who she was as a person. She was her daughter’s best friend and companion.

She was born in Brandon, MB, and always said it was the prettiest town. She was named Gladys after her mother’s favourite flower Gladiolus. She was the baby of the family and had four older siblings, Dick, Doreen, Mary, and Sandy. Her first big adventure was moving with Donna to London, ON. When her mom moved to Calgary, Gladys followed.

She met the love of her life on a blind date, they dated for several years. Finally, she told him “We are getting married if not I’m going to travel”. She was proposed to on February 14, and they married on March 7. When she was asked what attracted her to him, she told her daughter, “It was his work ethic, his honesty, steadfastness and that he would be a good dad.”

He passed when Gladys was 48. She knew there was still life to live. She worked in service with the Catholic Women’s League and St. Vincent de Paul. She had many adventures travelling with her siblings, friends, and her daughter. She didn’t know any strangers, just friends she hadn’t met yet. She was never too afraid to say I love you. She had the gift of accepting people just as they were. She believed in giving second, third and fourth changes. If you needed help, she would be there for you without a second thought.

She will be remembered for her patience, compassion, and kindness to others. She loved and was loved and that is a life well lived. In lieu of flowers, please consider doing a random act of kindness in her memory.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church (7624 – 39th Avenue N.W., Calgary, AB) on Friday, May 12, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow in the Church Hall. Condolences, memories and photos can also be shared and viewed here.
