Obituary of Leila Marjorie Goddard

December 16, 1926 – St. Michael, Barbados

May 20, 2023 - Calgary, Alberta

Leila Marjorie Goddard (nee Carter) came to this earth on December 16, 1926, in Barbados and left this earth from Calgary, AB, Canada, on May 20, 2023, at the age of 96.

Leila lived most of her life in the Westbury, Deacon’s Road and Black Rock areas of St. Michael, Barbados. After leaving school for economic reasons in her early teens, she became a telephone switchboard operator at Cave Shepherd Department Store until she and the love of her life, Norman, were married on February 7, 1948. Together they raised their four children in Barbados.

Leila was always a devoted wife and mother. She looked out for not only her children but all in the community. She was a loving mother and adult to the other children but was not to be crossed. Leila was always a softspoken person of few words until you got to know her well.

Leila loved gardening, hand sewing, going in the sea and being with family and friends. Later in life she took up cross stitch and knitting until her eyesight started to fail. Cooking was not a favourite activity for her, but no one could make Bajan Great Cake or fry flying fish or fish cakes like her.

Leila and Norman immigrated to Canada in 1986 where they lived in Red Deer and Calgary with their daughter, Cheryl, and her family before moving on their own within Calgary. When they were able, Leila and Norman enjoyed their winter trips back to Barbados.

Leila is lovingly remembered by her children, Stephen Goddard (Annamarie), Cheryl Nelson (John), C. Mark Goddard (Jeannine), Sandra Daniels (Dave); as well as many Grands, Great-grands, nieces, nephews, and friends.

Leila was predeceased by her husband, Norman and her sisters and brother.

The family would sincerely like to thank everyone for their love and support at this time. Special thanks to the amazingly caring and compassionate teams at AgeCare Seton who have become part of our extended family for almost eight years.

A Memorial Service will be held at McInnis & Holloway (Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road SE, Calgary, AB) on Saturday, June 17, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home. Condolences, memories, and photos can also be shared and viewed here. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to a charity of the donor’s choice.
