Obituary of Ian Rounthwaite

H. Ian Rounthwaite, Professor of Law Emeritus.

January 27, 1952 – October 19, 2023

Harry Ian Rounthwaite passed away peacefully in Calgary at the age of 71.  Ian started his tenured education at Ridley College in St. Catharines, Ontario, where he then went on to the University of Toronto. Ian attended the University of Windsor Law School, earning his Bachelor’s of Law Degree.  Thereafter, Ian obtained his Master’s of Law from the University of Michigan, with a specialty in Environmental Law.  Ian started his career at the University of Saskatoon, followed by a fulfilling 30-year career as Professor of Law and Associate Dean at the University of Calgary, where he shaped the young minds of future Lawyers.

Ian is survived by his wife Barb (nee Bowen), of over 50 years, son, Rob (Etsuko) Rounthwaite, daughter, Jennie (Chris) Woods, Mother, Jeanne Rounthwaite, and brother, John Rounthwaite.  Ian is also survived by his three beautiful grandchildren, Tommy Rounthwaite, Hailea Woods, and Jeremy Woods.  He also cherished his long-time friendship with the Honourable Shirzad Ahmed, who he loved and cherished as a chosen brother.  Ian was predeceased by his father, Dr. Harry Rounthwaite, sister, Susan Rounthwaite, of Sarnia, Ontario, brother-in-law, Bobby Bowen, mother and father-in-law, Phyllis and Vern Bowen, of St. Catharines, Ontario. 

Ian would not want to be mourned, rather to be remembered as Barb remembers him; smart, really really funny, sweet, the best most mischievous laugh anywhere, and as an athlete extraordinaire.  Ian was also the best husband and father in the world, and a very good man loved by many.

Funeral services will be held privately.  Ian wanted a Celebration of life held at his home, the Final Survivors Party.  Celebration of life will be held November 4, 2023, with drop in starting at 3:00pm and running into the evening hours at the family residence.  For family residence detail, please contact McInnis & Holloway, Crowfoot.
