Obituary of Marvin Glenn McConnell

August 14, 1931 - November 22, 2023

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father and grandfather, Marvin McConnell on Wednesday, November 22, 2023.

Marvin was born in Ridgedale, SK in 1931 and later moved to Creston, BC. where he finished his schooling. After a brief stint surveying, Marvin moved to Calgary where he began his career working for the CPR, first as a messenger on the trains and then with CP Express. It was in Calgary that he met the love of his life, Donna Anderson. They married in 1955 and moved into their new home in Kingsland. In 1962 their son Wendell was born.

Marvin’s life revolved around family. Much of his time was spent taking Wendell to hockey or soccer practices and games. He loved watching hockey and baseball on TV or just spending time with family. He was ecstatic when his grandson Travis was born and loved spending time camping and fishing with him.

After Marvin retired from CP Express he spent years driving the street car at Heritage Park. He loved seeing all the children and would let them sit on the stool and “drive the street car”.  

Marvin and Donna were lucky enough to be able to do a fair bit of travelling. They loved going on cruises and bus trips and had many stories about the people they met and the places they went.

Marvin is survived by his loving family, son Wendell (Nancy); grandson Travis (Tiffany); brother Rex McConnell (June); sister-in-law Doreen Barkley; and by many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Donna, his brothers Ken and Ed and his sisters Ivy, Elsie, Doris and Evelyn.

A Celebration of Marvin’s Life will be held at McInnis & Holloway (Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive SW, Calgary, AB) on Friday, December 8 at 2:00 p.m. Family and friends who are unable to attend in person are invited to join Marvin’s service streamed live (see below) on the day of the service. For those who are unable to view live, a recording of the service will be posted. Condolences, memories, and photos may be shared and viewed with Marvin’s family here.
