Obituary of Bev Barclay
March 30, 1947 - Paradise Hill, Saskatchewan
December 22, 2023 - Calgary, Alberta
Beverly Anne Barclay (nee Westgate), beloved wife of Charles Eric "Lee" Barclay, of Calgary, AB, passed away on Friday, December 22, 2023, at the age of 76 years.
Beverly was born in Paradise Hill, SK on March 30, 1947. She moved to Calgary, AB in 1985, where she resided until her move to Chinook Hospice (Calgary, AB) on December 14, 2023, where she passed away peacefully.
Beverly graduated from the Chetwynd Senior High School, graduating class of 1965. Beverly married Lee Barclay in July of 1966, and was the mother of two children.
She was a member of the Stampin’ Up club and enjoyed her time scrap booking, card making and art works, particularly looking forward to Tuesday morning Zoom calls with her fellow card makers from all over Canada. Beverly volunteered with Kiwanis Club in Calgary. She accomplished much through her life and was particularly proud of her grandkids, and family.
Beverly’s vacations were many, from the Panama Canal 19-day cruise (in 2019) with Alex and Catherine Hamilton (lifelong friends), as well as the Alaskan cruise with the same couple (2008). Beverly and Lee thoroughly enjoyed two trips to the east coast (Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, PEI and New Brunswick) in 2014 and 2016. Some of the fondest vacations we (as kids) recount are the visits to Fahler and the “potato farm”. Barb and Gus Arsenault (Theresa, Leo and Remi) have such a special place in our family, being groomsmen and bridesmaids in each of their respective weddings. In addition to these vacations, there were multiple camping trips with lifelong friends (Hamilton’s and Rudyk’s), to Kelowna (Winfield), Brazeau Dam, or the Devon Lion’s campground and of course Moberly Lake, BC. Pre-children vacations were also memorable – like the trip to Las Vegas with Gerry and Wendy Rudyk in the “blue van” as it was referred to when tales were retold. The memories of these will be remembered and shared for a lifetime.
Beverly ’s favourite saying was “oh, boy” or “what goes around, comes around”. Many of the “oh, boy” phrases may or may not have been used when one of the grandsons were headed to the penalty box in hockey.
She will be most remembered for her compassion, zest for life and most importantly her willingness to help family, friends, neighbours, and anyone else who she came in contact with. She lived for watching her grandsons and granddaughter grow up. She will only have missed one high school graduation (Owen – 2025) and Paige and Kameron’s due to Covid in 2020/2021. She learned quickly how to use Hockey TV / Flo Hockey to never miss watching a game for Devon or Owen, attending in person up until Owen’s last trip to Calgary in November 2023. Paige, being the only granddaughter (not spoiled at all) had a special connection with “grandma”, both having creative minds to craft up some cards or trinkets together. Beverly cherished the visits from Kameron when he was in Calgary for refereeing or Karsen when he was in Calgary for a holiday or just to visit. The guest books at the Barclay house were renewed often, a testament to how many lives Beverly touched.
Our neighbors always held a special place in the heart of Beverly. So many to mention but can’t go without speaking of in high regard - our “snow angel” – Angela Carmichael (John), sons Brent and Curtis, and daughter Ashley, Pat and Dave Cross, Lou Fraser and Marilyn Atkinson. Mom and dad cherish you all, you have been a lifeline to them both, through good and bad. Beverly will always be watching over you.
Besides her loving husband, Beverly is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Trina and David Bauer of Edmonton, AB; one son and daughter-in-law Trevor and Jorja Barclay of Grande Prairie, AB; five grandchildren, Paige Barclay of Nanaimo, BC, Devon and Owen Barclay of Grande Prairie, AB, Karsen Bauer of Fredericton, NB, and Kameron Bauer of Edmonton, AB.
Beverly is also survived by her three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Brian and Valerie Westgate of Edmonton, AB, Barry and Patricia Westgate of Chilliwack, BC and Brad Westgate; and niece, Brad’s daughter Carlee Moreen Westgate of Chetwynd, BC, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Beverly was predeceased by her brother Brent Westgate, parents Eugene and Moreen Westgate, and in-laws, Harry and Sue Barclay.
