Wendy Hyman, of Calgary, Alberta, passed away on Sunday, December 24, 2023, at the age of 53 years.
Wendy was born in Calgary, Alberta, on November 15, 1970.
Wendy graduated from the University of British Columbia with a Bachelor of Arts – Film and Television. Her accomplished career in film and television began in Vancouver at CTV after graduation. Wendy founded Big Sky Pictures in 1996 where she produced numerous full-length films and documentaries. Among her notable works was the award-winning feature film ‘On the Corner’. She was a full member of the Directors Guild of Canada – Alberta Chapter.
Wendy’s passion for filmmaking was matched only by the joy she received mentoring emerging talent through her involvement with the National Screen Institute and Telus Storyhive. For over ten years, Wendy spent countless hours guiding emerging filmmakers through all facets of film production from script writing to editing. Wendy has left a meaningful and enduring impact on the Canadian film industry.
An enthusiast of the outdoors, Wendy found solace in walking the Weaselhead trails at Glenmore Reservoir and exploring the mountains. Wendy dreamed of walking the Camino Trail in Spain, inspired by the physical accomplishment and spiritual awakening often discovered along its path.
Wendy will be fondly remembered for her boundless compassion, big heart, and willingness to extend a helping hand to anyone in need. She never met a dog she wouldn’t pet and could always make those around her laugh.
Wendy is survived by her loving parents Danny and Marilyn Hyman of Calgary, Alberta, her brother and sister-in-law, David and Tricia Hyman of Calgary, Alberta, and her boyfriend Kelly Sidebottom of Calgary, Alberta, along with a niece and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
A Memorial to celebrate Wendy’s life and legacy will be planned in the Spring. It will be an outdoor memorial, a fitting tribute to a soul so deeply connected to the natural world, allowing her spirit to forever intertwine with the landscapes she loved so much.
