Condolences
David was a wonderful man, so kind, and always willing to be a mentor and a helping hand to anyone who needed it. I encountered him over the years as an aboriginal law professor, and later for articling student interviews, and later through the Canadian Bar Association aboriginal law section. He was an excellent teacher, and always brought people together. I am so sorry for your loss. The world is a better place for having had David in it.
I had the distinct pleasure of attending David's Aboriginal Law course in 2009 at the University of Calgary. His measured, respectful and comprehensive lectures were an inspiration!
The news of his subsequent cancer diagnosis was a shock to all of the Law Faculty community. I met him and his wife at one of his appointments at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre - I had returned to law school after a similar brain cancer diagnosis left me unable to practice law. While brief, this chance meeting demonstrated the love and support of his family, the love he had for them as well as his determination to have a life well lived. He did so and will be missed.
My condolences to his wife, Lisa Hynes and children Maddy and Will.
David gave so much to the world - including to his alma mater. Thank you, David, for your teaching and your support and your friendship. We are a better place because of you.
David was such a bright light in this world sharing his brilliant mind with everyone who engaged with him. Always a natural teacher…so generous and giving in every way. I often would turn to David for his sage and practical legal advice…always coming away with a strategy and solution. His gentle and warm soul will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. Thinking and praying for comfort and healing for you Lisa, Maddy and Will at this difficult time.
