Obituary of Cheryl Lynne Jean Smith
November 27, 1938 – Winnipeg, Manitoba
January 27, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta
Cheryl Smith of Calgary, AB, passed away in her home on Saturday, January 27, 2024, at the age of 85 years, after a brief illness.
She was born in Winnipeg, MB, on November 27, 1938, to Jean (Lawrie) and Arthur Warren. She fondly remembered living with her grandparents and cousins during the war, and as an only child, was always close to her cousins. She enjoyed music and dancing, meeting Roger at the canteen dances when they were still in school. The pair married on September 23, 1959. They embarked on married life in Fort William, where Cheryl enjoyed working at Dominion Mercantile until she was expecting their first child.
Cheryl’s three daughters, Sandra, Laurie, and Carolyn soon filled her life. The family moved across western Canada from Thunder Bay, where she made friends that stayed close to her throughout her life, to Winnipeg, where the Bridge Club started her lifelong passion for the game. From Winnipeg, it was off to Regina where Cheryl and Roger built a house but were transferred again just a few months after its completion. After Regina, it was back to Winnipeg briefly, before settling in Calgary, the last transfer. Cheryl returned to work here in an administration role at Toole Peete Insurance Company.
Cheryl faced all the difficulties in life with a wry sense of humor, and laughter was commonly heard in the Smith home. The family grew when Sandra married John Campbell, soon followed by Laurie’s marriage to David Routledge. The next additions were Alexandra Campbell and Jeffrey Routledge, her grandchildren, whom Cheryl adored and who gave her much joy over the years.
After Roger’s death in 1999, she moved to the condo and enjoyed line dancing and of course some great hands of bridge. Cheryl’s love of travel took her across Canada and to places like Hawaii and Scotland. The cruise from Barcellona with Connie was a highlight of her later years. Back at home, Saturdays were often movie nights with Carolyn, and, in recent years, she got together every week with her daughters to do a puzzle or play scrabble.
Cheryl was very much loved and leaves to mourn many other close relatives and friends.
