Obituary of Gordon Gottlieb Zieffle

March 21, 1931 - Medicine Hat, Alberta

February 7, 2024 - Calgary, Alberta

Gordon Zieffle of Calgary, AB, husband of the late Sandra Zieffle, passed away peacefully from natural causes on Wednesday, February 7, 2024, at the age of 92 years.

Gordy was born on March 21, 1931, in Medicine Hat and spent his early life on a farm in the Schuler area. He went on to complete high school in Medicine Hat, then post-secondary education as a surveyor, Certified Draftsman, and Professional Engineer.

Gordy initially worked as a mine surveyor in Drumheller, then went on to work for Parks Canada surveying the national parks. In 1953, he started with the City of Calgary as a surveyor. While working for the city, he completed his engineering degree and draftsman certification. He went on to teach Design and Drafting Technology at SAIT in the evenings, all while working for the city. He loved his career and was well respected. He retired in 1986 as the manager of the Sanitation Division. Gordy was a proud member of the Engineering Institute of Canada and the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta.

Gordy enjoyed watching sports, hunting, fishing, camping, playing cards, doing sudoku games, and bird watching. He had a passion for birds, which included building and installing dozens of nest boxes to help the bluebird population in central Alberta. He was also a lifelong member of the Mountain Bluebird Trails Conservation Society. In his spare time, he enjoyed designing new buildings, renovating old ones, and doing all kinds of construction on many houses and structures during his long retirement.

Gordy will be remembered for his deep love and generosity to his family. He was predeceased by his parents, his loving wife Sandra, his brother Roger, his son Steve, and grandson Matthew. Gordy will be forever loved, dearly missed, and fondly remembered by his surviving family and friends.

Gordy wanted everyone to know that he lived a full life and was proud that he was able to live in his beloved home for 66 years. A little over a year ago he had to move into long-term care and he, along with his family, would like to thank all his doctors, nurses, and caregivers for their support during his time at Cambridge Manor.

Gordon’s legacy of love and kindness will forever live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
