Obituary of Gavin More

 February 18, 1950 - Westham, England

February 17, 2024 - Calgary, Alberta

It is with great sadness that Gavin More, beloved husband of Joanne Robertson-More, of Calgary, AB, passed away on Saturday, February 17, 2024, at the age of 73 years; one day short of his birthday.

Gavin was born in Westham, England on February 18, 1950, and immigrated to Canada with his family to Montreal, QC at the age of three.

Gavin was an adventurous spirit seeking experiences wherever they took him. As a young man, Gavin became Pipe Major for the Black Watch Cadet Corps at St. Helen’s Island Fort where he proudly reviewed the corps after being presented to Queen Elizabeth II on two occasions. He later traveled by train across Canada to attend the Banff Cadet Camp where he fell in love with the Rocky Mountains.

Gavin attended McGill University in 1971 and (1972-1978) completed master’s degrees in Wildlife Management at the University of Georgia, USA, and Zoology at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, where he researched pine marten.

Gavin’s many work opportunities included working as park planner with Alberta Recreation and Parks where his primary focus was on developing the newly created Kananaskis Country. He has also worked for the Canadian Wildlife Service, Parks Canada, the Northwest Territorial Government, and various other environmental agencies in numerous capacities. The environment and wildlife were Gavin’s passions.

Gavin took an avid part in leisure and sporting opportunities for his children. He was instrumental in developing the Edgemont soccer program and in organizing, coaching, and officiating biathlon. His own interests included mapping out the family history and has created a legacy with his research. He was always proud of his Scottish/English heritage and took up Scottish Country Dancing in later years.

Gavin was a kind, funny, gentle-spirited man who always found something to chat about. Life was his interest.

Gavin will be sorely missed by his wife Joanne, sons, Alasdair (Karissa) Robertson-More and Connal (Gale Ann) Robertson-More; daughter Brinna Hayes (Edward), and his grandchildren—"the little guys” as Gavin referred to them collectively: Henry, Hudson, Summer, Kinley, and Everly.

Gavin is also survived by his sisters, Elizabeth Buchanan, Linda More (Rudy Kause) of Edmonton, and Katherine Robinson (Paul) of Toronto; brother Ian More of Hamilton, and nieces, Shaylyn and Ainslie Buchanan, Glenys Robinson, and Madeline More.

Gavin was predeceased by his parents, Gavin and Myra More; brother Andrew More, sister Anne Osadchuck, and brother-in-law Bill Osadchuk.

As per Gavin's wishes, no formal service will be held.
