Obituary of Jason Alexander Dubchak
July 8, 1972 – Edmonton, Alberta
February 29, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta
It is with heavy hearts that we share that Jason Dubchak passed away on Thursday, February 29, 2024. He was the proudest dad to Abby and Sam, loving husband to Adriana, and an amazing son, sincere friend, and valued colleague.
Jason Alexander Dubchak was born July 8, 1972, to Velma (nee Elliott) and Richard Dubchak in Edmonton, AB. He grew up in Red Deer, AB graduating from Lindsay Thurber High School in 1990. He was an avid young athlete playing several high school sports, and there began his lifelong love of football along with his commitment to his education.
Professionally, Jason was VP General Counsel and Corporate Secretary with Rockpoint Gas Storage. He was one of the longest-serving employees, originally starting with Alberta Energy Company in 2001, and was consistently dedicated to his work and a valued team member. He was a proud graduate of the University of Calgary with his undergraduate degree in Political Science (Hons) and then received his Law degree from the University of Alberta. His education was the foundation of a fulfilling career, but also the beginning of enduring friendships.
In 2003, Jason married Adriana Sopruniuk in Greece and together, they built a family and life filled with love and laughter. He and Adriana were blessed with Abigail Sophia in 2005 and Samuel Victor in 2007. In addition, Jason became a “new” son to Slava Sopruniuk, and their mutual love and reciprocated generosity was clear to everyone who knew them. This family unit was everything to Jason. Jason was both a mentor to and an admirer of his two children. Seeing Abby off to Queen’s University where she is studying biomedical engineering was momentous for Jason. He took great pleasure in supporting Sam’s hockey journey, with Sam presently playing for the Calgary Royals U18AAA while attending Bishop Carroll High School.
The best days in Jason’s world were spent with family and friends. Hosting a backyard barbeque with something amazing off his various grills, watching football on Sundays, following Abby and Sam’s pursuits, and seeing their friends wander through their home brought him immense joy. The simplest things were big things for Jay; a family vacation, driving a boat, casting a rod, sharing a cold one, and a great dad joke.
Jason Dubchak will be remembered as a loving husband, father, son, and friend. The joy he brought to every gathering will be deeply missed by his family along with a wide circle of friends and colleagues. His warmth, wisdom, and incredible wit were his hallmark and will be remembered by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
A “Jason style” gathering, to share stories and cherish his memory, will be held later in the spring.
Condolences, memories, and photos may be shared and viewed with Jason’s family here.
