Obituary of Frances Mary Lang

November 29, 1928 – Cupar, Saskatchewan

March 18, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with profound sadness and with broken hearts that we announce the passing of our wonderful mother, Frances Mary Lang (nee Mitchell). Mom passed away peacefully at Newport Harbour Care Centre on Monday, March 18, 2024, at the age of 95 years.

Mom was born to Ignatius and Elizabeth Mitchell in Cupar, SK. She was the eldest of four siblings, and the only girl. Mom married at the young age of seventeen and went on to have her own large family of eleven children. She raised us with dignity and lots of love. She was always around and ready to help wherever she was needed, always caring for someone somewhere.

Mom was a great baker and a wonderful cook. Her talents were immeasurable. She was a gifted seamstress and made a career of that for many years in the laundry department at the Calgary General Hospital.

Mom always had a keen eye for fashion and liked to be nicely dressed, with well-kept hair. When she first arrived at Newport Harbour, a staff member was approaching her in the hallway — mom looked at her and said, “Those shoes do not go with that outfit”.

Mom is survived by her children, Patt Lang (Marian), Marilyn Brown (Lorne), Donn Lang (Dari), Monica Krenzel (Bruce), Colleen Young (Russ), Gerry Lang, Leonard Lang (Margot), Mark Lang, Mary Anne Kinnell (Bruce), and Rose Anne Matlo (Terry); twenty-two grandchildren, and seventeen great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her parents, Ignatius and Elizabeth Mitchell, her husband Ferdinand, son Charles, brothers Kenneth, Gerard, and Hugh (Buzzy); son-in-law Leo Meier, daughter-in-law Denise Lang, and infant daughter Mary Frances, and infant granddaughter Jessica Rose Matlo.

Her family would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the staff at Newport Harbour Care Centre for mom’s care and friendship over the past ten years.

Relatives and friends are invited to Prayers and Tributes at McInnis & Holloway (Deerfoot South, 12281 40 Street SE, Calgary AB T2Z 4E6) on Friday, March 22, 2024, at 6:00 p.m.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Trinity Catholic Church (1525 – 45th Street S.E., Calgary, AB) on Tuesday, March 26, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. Graveside Service to follow at Mountain View Cemetery.

Family and friends who are unable to attend in person are invited to join Mrs. Lang’s service streamed live (see link below) on the day of the service. For those who are unable to view live, a recording of the service will be posted.
