Condolences
Ev was our neighbour in Canyon Meadows - Ev and Art - we had 2 girls and they had 3 so all of us became fast friends. Ev was part of our "Picnic Group" which met every Sunday at Sandy Beach - during the summer of course. This group continued to meet for Grey Cup and to sing carols at Christmas. Ev was our organist and choir master. Boy, could we destroy Oh Holy Night, on the high notes. She was a lovely person with a wonderful laugh - a good friend to me and my family. May she rest in peace. A good life well lived.
Evelyn and I were childhood friends when I was six and started school where Evelyn’s Mom, Mrs. Young, was the teacher. About five years later they moved to Saskatoon where I visited a few times during pre-teen and teen years. When I studied nursing in Saskatoon we saw each other more often. My husband and I went to Ontario in 1967 and Evelyn and Art were in Montreal so we had more time together. Nadine was a toddler and Tanya was born before Ev and Art moved back to western Canada. In 1987 Art came to Ottawa from Calgary for work and Evelyn followed after managing moving details. For the next ten years we were in the same city and had many celebrations together. Evelyn was a lovely addition to any gathering and a good friend. We have wonderful memories of these times.
Evelyn was the manager of the Red Deer Bridge club from 2009 -2016 as well as directing. She worked tirelessly to promote the bridge club . She was especially good at encouraging new members with teaching lessons and mentoring. She was Saskatoons loss when she and Art moved Red Deer. A common refrain we often heard at tournaments when we ran into players from Saskatoon was " Oh you are so lucky you got our Evelyn " She will be missed in the bridge world.
I want to share a memory that was shared with me by mom’s childhood friend, Lucille (nee Schneider?) Franke. Lucille explained that through elementary school, they were close friends, and Lucille room/boarded with the Young’s when they lived on Dieppe Street in Saskatoon while Lucille was going to business college.
I spoke with dad this morning and he confirmed that he had attended a dance in Revenue, Sk with his friend Harvey Schaub. Mom was Harvey’s date and dad went with another girl. This was the first time he met mom. The very next day, while Lucille was washing dishes with mom in the kitchen of Lucille’s parent’s home in Scott, Sk., Lucille remembers seeing dad walking up the steps and knocking on the door to ask mom out on a date.
The rest, they say, is history. Rest peacefully mom.
So sorry to hear this sad news. Evelyn took me on as a team member for tournaments when I was a novice. I have fond memories of all the tournaments I went to with Liz warren Evelyn and Dawna Finlay Penticton was a favourite staying at the Shoreline Motel every year, I was her partner for the last tournament she went to on Penticton before moving to Calgary. I can see her meeting with Dawna Finlay up there looking down at us and still wanting to give advice.
