Obituary of Sidney Wealleans

August 14, 1940 – Paddington, London, England

April 21, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta

Sid Wealleans of Calgary, AB, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 21, 2024, just thirteen days after his identical twin brother Edward (Ted) Wealleans.
 

Sid and Ted were born in Paddington, London, to Joseph and Jane Wealleans on August 14, 1940.

Sid is survived by his wife Helen of 59 years, and their three children, Stephen (Jennie) Wealleans, Nicola (Sylvain) Trolez, and Matthew (Shaunna) Wealleans. He was also proud poppa to his four grandchildren, Ben, Danielle, Sophie, and Liam; two step-grandchildren, Maya and Leo; and his younger brother John.

Sid’s first passion was music, and in his teens, he played in the band The Riversiders, alongside his brother Ted. Knowing that music would likely not take him far, Sid enrolled at Paddington Tech and trained as a draughtsman and later became a mechanical engineer.

Sid met Helen on a blind date, and it was love at first sight. The two were married in March of 1965 and moved into a home in Woodley, Berkshire, where they welcomed their first child Stephen in 1966, soon to be followed by Nicola in 1969, and Matthew in 1971.

Shortly after, they relocated to Winnersh, where Sid continued to work as an engineer; a skill that found him working abroad for two years assisting in building Mubarak Hospital in Kuwait, visiting home every two months to the welcoming arms of Helen and the kids. Once back working in the UK, Sid got involved in serving his community, where he served on the parish council and formed and ran a local youth club that catered to over one hundred youth in the area.

His joy in helping the community continued when the family immigrated to Canada in October of 1981. Sid and Helen bought a house just a few blocks from Ted's family in Haysboro, where he served as president of the community association for close to fifteen years.
 

He was never one to sit back and wasn’t afraid to take swings in life. He and Helen opened Visible Changes Hair Salon in the late eighties, and later he co-owned the heating and plumbing company, All Services.
 

At home, he was just as dedicated. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He actively supported his children and grandchildren in any way he was able and was the finest example of a “Dad”, with plenty of bad dad jokes, and always room for extra helpings of pudding. He was the proverbial cat with nine lives, who weathered many medical setbacks. These only served to make him more appreciative of those he loved and wanting to spend as much time with them as he could, for as long as he was able.

He and Helen were also passionate gardeners. Sid built his own greenhouse, complete with a hydronic heating system he designed and installed himself. He also loved to fish and taught the skill to his grandchildren, despite not catching many fish. His sons commented that he typically used so many weights on his line, that he was more likely to knock out a fish than ever catch one on his hook!

He was simply adored by his family who already miss him so much. The shared grief of losing him is so deep and heavy, simply because he commanded so very much of our love.
