Obituary of Shirley Irene Edwards

August 1935 – April 2024

Shirley passed away peacefully in April 2024, at the age of 88 years. She was a beloved wife, sister, aunt, mother, grandmother, and recently a great-grandmother. She will be missed by many.

Shirley was one of eleven children. After travelling from her home in Wilkie, SK, to become a nurse at Vancouver General Hospital, she married her childhood sweetheart, Garry, and they raised their family in Calgary. Shirley was creative and fun and had a keen wit, she could surprise you by colouring herself green at Halloween or by writing a poem for someone’s special celebration. She loved to paint, sketch, bake, and tend her lovely garden.

She especially enjoyed time with her treasured friends, at theme parties, golf tournaments and birthday lunches. She volunteered over the years with her children’s schools, political parties in the 1970s, and more recently with the Samaritan Club. She and Garry enjoyed memorable holidays together and spent many summers with friends and family at the cabin at Shuswap Lake.
 

Left to mourn her loss are Garry Edwards, her husband of over 66 years; daughter Jill Joyce (Peter); son Tim Edwards (Francesca); cherished grandchildren, Michael Joyce (Sarah) and Katie Joyce (Torin Bateman); her one beautiful great-granddaughter, Eleanor Joyce; brothers, Boyd (Kathy) and Dave (Mickey); and her sisters Dawn, Gail (Willis), Pat and Ellen. She will also be missed by her three step-grandchildren, Harrison Christie, Clint Anderson, and Sam (Mikayla) Anderson.
 

Shirley was predeceased by her parents, Irene (née Crannage) and George Bagnall, her brothers, Don, Bill and Jim, and her sister Ruth.

We welcome family and friends to attend a small gathering at the family home on Saturday, May 11, 2024, from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm, to honour Shirley’s memory.
 

The family respectfully declines flowers, but notes of condolence are welcome.

We offer heartfelt thanks to Trinity Lodge and Chinook Hospice for the wonderful care our mother received.
